The preload build now confirms each linker candidate with a probe link
before using it (PR #722), because an installed linker is not always
a capable one: rustup's rust-lld lacks zlib and cannot link against
FreeBSD's compressed crt objects. Describe the probe, its fallbacks
and its cost in the linker-selection entry, in the entry's current
form, and point the crate notes at it.
