net/sched: qdisc_qstats_qlen_backlog() runs locklessly
qdisc_qstats_qlen_backlog() can be called without qdisc spinlock being held.
Use qdisc_qlen_lockless() instead of qdisc_qlen().
Add a const qualifier to its first parameter (struct Qdisc *sch).

net_sched: fix skb memory leak in deferred qdisc drops
When the network stack cleans up the deferred list via qdisc_run_end(),
it operates on the root qdisc. If the root qdisc do not implement the
TCQ_F_DEQUEUE_DROPS flag the packets queue to free are never freed and
gets stranded on the child's local to_free list.
Fix this by making qdisc_dequeue_drop() aware of the root qdisc. It
fetches the root qdisc and check for the TCQ_F_DEQUEUE_DROPS flag. If
the flag is present, the packet is appended directly to the root's
to_free list. Otherwise, drop it directly as it was done before the
optimization was implemented.

clsact: Fix use-after-free in init/destroy rollback asymmetry
Fix a use-after-free in the clsact qdisc upon init/destroy rollback asymmetry. The latter is achieved by first fully initializing a clsact instance, and then in a second step having a replacement failure for the new clsact qdisc instance. clsact_init() initializes ingress first and then takes care of the egress part. This can fail midway, for example, via tcf_block_get_ext(). Upon failure, the kernel will trigger the clsact_destroy() callback. Commit |

Workflow to reproduce:
1. Initialize a TEQL topology (dummy0 and ifb0 as slaves, teql0 up).
2. Start multiple sender workers continuously transmitting packets
through teql0 to drive teql_master_xmit().
3. In parallel, repeatedly delete and re-add the root qdisc on
dummy0 and ifb0 via RTNETLINK, forcing frequent teardown and reset activity
(teql_destroy() / qdisc_reset()).
4. After running both workloads concurrently for several iterations,
KASAN reports slab-use-after-free or double-free in the skb free path.
Fix this by moving dev_reset_queue to sch_generic.h and calling it, instead
of qdisc_reset, in teql_destroy since it handles both the lock and lockless
cases correctly for root qdiscs.

net/sched: do not reset queues in graft operations
Following typical script is extremely disruptive,
because each graft operation calls dev_deactivate()
which resets all the queues of the device.
QPARAM="limit 100000 flow_limit 1000 buckets 4096"
TXQS=64
for ETH in eth1
do
tc qd del dev $ETH root 2>/dev/null
tc qd add dev $ETH root handle 1: mq
for i in `seq 1 $TXQS`
do
slot=$( printf %x $(( i )) )
tc qd add dev $ETH parent 1:$slot fq $QPARAM
done
done
One can add "ip link set dev $ETH down/up" to reduce the disruption time:
QPARAM="limit 100000 flow_limit 1000 buckets 4096"
TXQS=64
for ETH in eth1
do
ip link set dev $ETH down
tc qd del dev $ETH root 2>/dev/null
tc qd add dev $ETH root handle 1: mq
for i in `seq 1 $TXQS`
do
slot=$( printf %x $(( i )) )
tc qd add dev $ETH parent 1:$slot fq $QPARAM
done
ip link set dev $ETH up
done
Or we can add a @reset_needed flag to dev_deactivate() and
dev_deactivate_many().
This flag is set to true at device dismantle or linkwatch_do_dev(),
and to false for graft operations.
In the future, we might only stop one queue instead of the whole
device, ie call dev_deactivate_queue() instead of dev_deactivate().
I think the problem (quadratic behavior) was added in commit

net: sched: avoid qdisc_reset_all_tx_gt() vs dequeue race for lockless qdiscs
When shrinking the number of real tx queues,
netif_set_real_num_tx_queues() calls qdisc_reset_all_tx_gt() to flush
qdiscs for queues which will no longer be used.
qdisc_reset_all_tx_gt() currently serializes qdisc_reset() with
qdisc_lock(). However, for lockless qdiscs, the dequeue path is
serialized by qdisc_run_begin/end() using qdisc->seqlock instead, so
qdisc_reset() can run concurrently with __qdisc_run() and free skbs
while they are still being dequeued, leading to UAF.
This can easily be reproduced on e.g. virtio-net by imposing heavy
traffic while frequently changing the number of queue pairs:
iperf3 -ub0 -c $peer -t 0 &
while :; do
ethtool -L eth0 combined 1
ethtool -L eth0 combined 2
done
With KASAN enabled, this leads to reports like:

Serialize qdisc_reset_all_tx_gt() against the lockless dequeue path by
taking qdisc->seqlock for TCQ_F_NOLOCK qdiscs, matching the

Additionally clear QDISC_STATE_NON_EMPTY after reset so the qdisc state
reflects an empty queue, avoiding needless re-scheduling.

net: sched: introduce qdisc-specific drop reason tracing
Create new enum qdisc_drop_reason and trace_qdisc_drop tracepoint for qdisc layer drop diagnostics with direct qdisc context visibility. The new tracepoint includes qdisc handle, parent, kind (name), and device information. Existing SKB_DROP_REASON_QDISC_DROP is retained for backwards compatibility via kfree_skb_reason(). Convert qdiscs with drop reasons to use the new infrastructure. Change CAKE's cobalt_should_drop() return type from enum skb_drop_reason to enum qdisc_drop_reason to fix implicit enum conversion warnings. Use QDISC_DROP_UNSPEC as the 'not dropped' sentinel instead of SKB_NOT_DROPPED_YET. Both have the same compiled value (0), so the comparison logic remains semantically equivalent. net_sched: add qdisc_dequeue_drop() helper
Some qdisc like cake, codel, fq_codel might drop packets in their dequeue() method. This is currently problematic because dequeue() runs with the qdisc spinlock held. Freeing skbs can be extremely expensive. Add qdisc_dequeue_drop() method and a new TCQ_F_DEQUEUE_DROPS so that these qdiscs can opt-in to defer the skb frees after the socket spinlock is released. TCQ_F_DEQUEUE_DROPS is an attempt to not penalize other qdiscs with an extra cache line miss. Reorganize things to have a first cache line mostly read,
then a mostly written one.
This gives a ~3% increase of performance under tx stress.
Note that there is an additional hole because @qstats now spans over a third cache line.

net: dev_queue_xmit() llist adoption
Remove busylock spinlock and use a lockless list (llist)
to reduce spinlock contention to the minimum.
Idea is that only one cpu might spin on the qdisc spinlock,
while others simply add their skb in the llist.
After this patch, we get a 300 % improvement on heavy TX workloads.
- Sending twice the number of packets per second.
- While consuming 50 % less cycles.
Note that this also allows in the future to submit batches
to various qdisc->enqueue() methods.
Tested:
- Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) 6985P-C (480 hyper threads).
- 100Gbit NIC, 30 TX queues with FQ packet scheduler.
- echo 64 >/sys/kernel/slab/skbuff_small_head/cpu_partial (avoid contention in mm)

net/sched: Fix backlog accounting in qdisc_dequeue_internal
This issue applies for the following qdiscs: hhf, fq, fq_codel, and fq_pie, and occurs in their change handlers when adjusting to the new limit. The problem is the following in the values passed to the subsequent qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog call given a tbf parent: When the tbf parent runs out of tokens, skbs of these qdiscs will be placed in gso_skb. Their peek handlers are qdisc_peek_dequeued, which accounts for both qlen and backlog. However, in the case of qdisc_dequeue_internal, ONLY qlen is accounted for when pulling from gso_skb. This means that these qdiscs are missing a qdisc_qstats_backlog_dec when dropping packets to satisfy the new limit in their change handlers. One can observe this issue with the following (with tc patched to support a limit of 0): export TARGET=fq tc qdisc del dev lo root tc qdisc add dev lo root handle 1: tbf rate 8bit burst 100b latency 1ms tc qdisc replace dev lo handle 3: parent 1:1 $TARGET limit 1000 echo ''; echo 'add child'; tc -s -d qdisc show dev lo ping -I lo -f -c2 -s32 -W0.001 127.0.0.1 2>&1 >/dev/null echo ''; echo 'after ping'; tc -s -d qdisc show dev lo tc qdisc change dev lo handle 3: parent 1:1 $TARGET limit 0 echo ''; echo 'after limit drop'; tc -s -d qdisc show dev lo tc qdisc replace dev lo handle 2: parent 1:1 sfq echo ''; echo 'post graft'; tc -s -d qdisc show dev lo The second to last show command shows 0 packets but a positive number (74) of backlog bytes. The problem becomes clearer in the last show command, where qdisc_purge_queue triggers qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog with the positive backlog and causes an underflow in the tbf parent's backlog (4096 Mb instead of 0). To fix this issue, the codepath for all clients of qdisc_dequeue_internal has been simplified: codel, pie, hhf, fq, fq_pie, and fq_codel. qdisc_dequeue_internal handles the backlog adjustments for all cases that do not directly use the dequeue handler. The old fq_codel_change limit adjustment loop accumulated the arguments to the subsequent qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog call through the cstats field. However, this is confusing and error prone as fq_codel_dequeue could also potentially mutate this field (which qdisc_dequeue_internal calls in the non gso_skb case), so we have unified the code here with other qdiscs. net_sched: Flush gso_skb list too during ->change()
Previously, when reducing a qdisc's limit via the ->change() operation, only the main skb queue was trimmed, potentially leaving packets in the gso_skb list. This could result in NULL pointer dereference when we only check sch->limit against sch->q.qlen. This patch introduces a new helper, qdisc_dequeue_internal(), which ensures both the gso_skb list and the main queue are properly flushed when trimming excess packets. All relevant qdiscs (codel, fq, fq_codel, fq_pie, hhf, pie) are updated to use this helper in their ->change() routines. Fixes: |

net: sched: generalize check for no-queue qdisc on TX queue
The "noqueue" qdisc can either be directly attached, or get default attached if net_device priv_flags has IFF_NO_QUEUE. In both cases, the allocated Qdisc structure gets it's enqueue function pointer reset to NULL by noqueue_init() via noqueue_qdisc_ops. This is a common case for software virtual net_devices. For these devices with no-queue, the transmission path in __dev_queue_xmit() will bypass the qdisc layer. Directly invoking device drivers ndo_start_xmit (via dev_hard_start_xmit). In this mode the device driver is not allowed to ask for packets to be queued (either via returning NETDEV_TX_BUSY or stopping the TXQ). The simplest and most reliable way to identify this no-queue case is by checking if enqueue == NULL. The vrf driver currently open-codes this check (!qdisc->enqueue). While functionally correct, this low-level detail is better encapsulated in a dedicated helper for clarity and long-term maintainability. To make this behavior more explicit and reusable, this patch introduce a new helper: qdisc_txq_has_no_queue(). Helper will also be used by the veth driver in the next patch, which introduces optional qdisc-based backpressure. This is a non-functional change. net: sched: Fix truncation of offloaded action statistics
In case of tc offload, when user space queries the kernel for tc action
statistics, tc will query the offloaded statistics from device drivers.
Among other statistics, drivers are expected to pass the number of
packets that hit the action since the last query as a 64-bit number.
Unfortunately, tc treats the number of packets as a 32-bit number,
leading to truncation and incorrect statistics when the number of
packets since the last query exceeds 0xffffffff:
$ tc -s filter show dev swp2 ingress
filter protocol all pref 1 flower chain 0
filter protocol all pref 1 flower chain 0 handle 0x1
skip_sw
in_hw in_hw_count 1
action order 1: mirred (Egress Redirect to device swp1) stolen
index 1 ref 1 bind 1 installed 58 sec used 0 sec
Action statistics:
Sent 1133877034176 bytes 536959475 pkt (dropped 0, overlimits 0 requeues 0)
[...]
According to the above, 2111-byte packets were redirected which is
impossible as only 64-byte packets were transmitted and the MTU was
1500.
Fix by treating packets as a 64-bit number:
$ tc -s filter show dev swp2 ingress
filter protocol all pref 1 flower chain 0
filter protocol all pref 1 flower chain 0 handle 0x1
skip_sw
in_hw in_hw_count 1
action order 1: mirred (Egress Redirect to device swp1) stolen
index 1 ref 1 bind 1 installed 61 sec used 0 sec
Action statistics:
Sent 1370624380864 bytes 21416005951 pkt (dropped 0, overlimits 0 requeues 0)
[...]
Which shows that only 64-byte packets were redirected (1370624380864 /
21416005951 = 64).

on the assumption it is invariant between the enqueue()
and dequeue() handlers.
Unfortunately syzbot can crash a host rather easily using
a TBF + SFQ combination, with an STAB on SFQ [1]
We can't support TCA_STAB on arbitrary level, this would
require to maintain per-qdisc storage.

net: sched: make skip_sw actually skip software
TC filters come in 3 variants: - no flag (try to process in hardware, but fallback to software)) - skip_hw (do not process filter by hardware) - skip_sw (do not process filter by software) However skip_sw is implemented so that the skip_sw flag can first be checked, after it has been matched. IMHO it's common when using skip_sw, to use it on all rules. So if all filters in a block is skip_sw filters, then we can bail early, we can thus avoid having to match the filters, just to check for the skip_sw flag. This patch adds a bypass, for when only TC skip_sw rules are used. The bypass is guarded by a static key, to avoid harming other workloads. There are 3 ways that a packet from a skip_sw ruleset, can end up in the kernel path. Although the send packets to a non-existent chain way is only improved a few percents, then I believe it's worth optimizing the trap and fall-though use-cases. +----------------------------+--------+--------+--------+ | Test description | Pre- | Post- | Rel. | | | kpps | kpps | chg. | +----------------------------+--------+--------+--------+ | basic forwarding + notrack | 3589.3 | 3587.9 | 1.00x | | switch to eswitch mode | 3081.8 | 3094.7 | 1.00x | | add ingress qdisc | 3042.9 | 3063.6 | 1.01x | | tc forward in hw / skip_sw |37024.7 |37028.4 | 1.00x | | tc forward in sw / skip_hw | 3245.0 | 3245.3 | 1.00x | +----------------------------+--------+--------+--------+ | tests with only skip_sw rules below: | +----------------------------+--------+--------+--------+ | 1 non-matching rule | 2694.7 | 3058.7 | 1.14x | | 1 n-m rule, match trap | 2611.2 | 3323.1 | 1.27x | | 1 n-m rule, goto non-chain | 2886.8 | 2945.9 | 1.02x | | 5 non-matching rules | 1958.2 | 3061.3 | 1.56x | | 5 n-m rules, match trap | 1911.9 | 3327.0 | 1.74x | | 5 n-m rules, goto non-chain| 2883.1 | 2947.5 | 1.02x | | 10 non-matching rules | 1466.3 | 3062.8 | 2.09x | | 10 n-m rules, match trap | 1444.3 | 3317.9 | 2.30x | | 10 n-m rules,goto non-chain| 2883.1 | 2939.5 | 1.02x | | 25 non-matching rules | 838.5 | 3058.9 | 3.65x | | 25 n-m rules, match trap | 824.5 | 3323.0 | 4.03x | | 25 n-m rules,goto non-chain| 2875.8 | 2944.7 | 1.02x | | 50 non-matching rules | 488.1 | 3054.7 | 6.26x | | 50 n-m rules, match trap | 484.9 | 3318.5 | 6.84x | | 50 n-m rules,goto non-chain| 2884.1 | 2939.7 | 1.02x | +----------------------------+--------+--------+--------+ perf top (25 n-m skip_sw rules - pre patch): 20.39% [kernel] [k] __skb_flow_dissect 16.43% [kernel] [k] rhashtable_jhash2 10.58% [kernel] [k] fl_classify 10.23% [kernel] [k] fl_mask_lookup 4.79% [kernel] [k] memset_orig 2.58% [kernel] [k] tcf_classify 1.47% [kernel] [k] __x86_indirect_thunk_rax 1.42% [kernel] [k] __dev_queue_xmit 1.36% [kernel] [k] nft_do_chain 1.21% [kernel] [k] __rcu_read_lock perf top (25 n-m skip_sw rules - post patch): 5.12% [kernel] [k] __dev_queue_xmit 4.77% [kernel] [k] nft_do_chain 3.65% [kernel] [k] dev_gro_receive 3.41% [kernel] [k] check_preemption_disabled 3.14% [kernel] [k] mlx5e_skb_from_cqe_mpwrq_nonlinear 2.88% [kernel] [k] __netif_receive_skb_core.constprop.0 2.49% [kernel] [k] mlx5e_xmit 2.15% [kernel] [k] ip_forward 1.95% [kernel] [k] mlx5e_tc_restore_tunnel 1.92% [kernel] [k] vlan_gro_receive Test setup: DUT: Intel Xeon D-1518 (2.20GHz) w/ Nvidia/Mellanox ConnectX-6 Dx 2x100G Data rate measured on switch (Extreme X690), and DUT connected as a router on a stick, with pktgen and pktsink as VLANs. net/sched: flower: Fix chain template offload
When a qdisc is deleted from a net device the stack instructs the
underlying driver to remove its flow offload callback from the
associated filter block using the 'FLOW_BLOCK_UNBIND' command. The stack
then continues to replay the removal of the filters in the block for
this driver by iterating over the chains in the block and invoking the
'reoffload' operation of the classifier being used. In turn, the
classifier in its 'reoffload' operation prepares and emits a
'FLOW_CLS_DESTROY' command for each filter.
However, the stack does not do the same for chain templates and the
underlying driver never receives a 'FLOW_CLS_TMPLT_DESTROY' command when
a qdisc is deleted. This results in a memory leak [1] which can be
reproduced using [2].
Fix by introducing a 'tmplt_reoffload' operation and have the stack
invoke it with the appropriate arguments as part of the replay.
Implement the operation in the sole classifier that supports chain
templates (flower) by emitting the 'FLOW_CLS_TMPLT_{CREATE,DESTROY}'
command based on whether a flow offload callback is being bound to a
filter block or being unbound from one.
As far as I can tell, the issue happens since cited commit which
reordered tcf_block_offload_unbind() before tcf_block_flush_all_chains()
in __tcf_block_put(). The order cannot be reversed as the filter block
is expected to be freed after flushing all the chains.

net/sched: cls_api: Expose tc block to the datapath
The datapath can now find the block of the port in which the packet arrived at. In the next patch we show a possible usage of this patch in a new version of mirred that multicasts to all ports except for the port in which the packet arrived on. net/sched: Introduce tc block netdev tracking infra
This commit makes tc blocks track which ports have been added to them. And, with that, we'll be able to use this new information to send packets to the block's ports. Which will be done in the patch #3 of this series. net: sched: Make tc-related drop reason more flexible for remaining qdiscs
Incrementing on Daniel's patch[1], make tc-related drop reason more flexible for remaining qdiscs - that is, all qdiscs aside from clsact. In essence, the drop reason will be set by cls_api and act_api in case any error occurred in the data path. With that, we can give the user more detailed information so that they can distinguish between a policy drop or an error drop. net: sched: Move drop_reason to struct tc_skb_cb
Move drop_reason from struct tcf_result to skb cb - more specifically to struct tc_skb_cb. With that, we'll be able to also set the drop reason for the remaining qdiscs (aside from clsact) that do not have access to tcf_result when time comes to set the skb drop reason. net, sched: Make tc-related drop reason more flexible
Currently, the kfree_skb_reason() in sch_handle_{ingress,egress}() can only
express a basic SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_INGRESS or SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_EGRESS reason.
Victor kicked-off an initial proposal to make this more flexible by disambiguating
verdict from return code by moving the verdict into struct tcf_result and
letting tcf_classify() return a negative error. If hit, then two new drop
reasons were added in the proposal, that is SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_INGRESS_ERROR
as well as SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_EGRESS_ERROR. Further analysis of the actual
error codes would have required to attach to tcf_classify via kprobe/kretprobe
to more deeply debug skb and the returned error.
In order to make the kfree_skb_reason() in sch_handle_{ingress,egress}() more
extensible, it can be addressed in a more straight forward way, that is: Instead
of placing the verdict into struct tcf_result, we can just put the drop reason
in there, which does not require changes throughout various classful schedulers
given the existing verdict logic can stay as is.
Then, SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_ERROR{,_*} can be added to the enum skb_drop_reason
to disambiguate between an error or an intentional drop. New drop reason error
codes can be added successively to the tc code base.
For internal error locations which have not yet been annotated with a
SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_ERROR{,_*}, the fallback is SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_INGRESS and
SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_EGRESS, respectively. Generic errors could be marked with a
SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_ERROR code until they are converted to more specific ones
if it is found that they would be useful for troubleshooting.
While drop reasons have infrastructure for subsystem specific error codes which
are currently used by mac80211 and ovs, Jakub mentioned that it is preferred
for tc to use the enum skb_drop_reason core codes given it is a better fit and
currently the tooling support is better, too.
With regards to the latter:
[...] I think Alastair (bpftrace) is working on auto-prettifying enums when
bpftrace outputs maps. So we can do something like:
$ bpftrace -e 'tracepoint:skb:kfree_skb { @[args->reason] = count(); }'
Attaching 1 probe...
^C
@[SKB_DROP_REASON_TC_INGRESS]: 2
@[SKB_CONSUMED]: 34
^^^^^^^^^^^^ names!!
Auto-magically. [...]
Add a small helper tcf_set_drop_reason() which can be used to set the drop reason
into the tcf_result.

net/sched: wrap open coded Qdics class filter counter
The 'filter_cnt' counter is used to control a Qdisc class lifetime. Each filter referecing this class by its id will eventually increment/decrement this counter in their respective 'add/update/delete' routines. As these operations are always serialized under rtnl lock, we don't need an atomic type like 'refcount_t'. It also means that we lose the overflow/underflow checks already present in refcount_t, which are valuable to hunt down bugs where the unsigned counter wraps around as it aids automated tools like syzkaller to scream in such situations. Wrap the open coded increment/decrement into helper functions and add overflow checks to the operations.
