Florian WestphalandSasha Levin 07a9b32eaa netfilter: xt_tcpmss: check remaining length before reading optlen
[ Upstream commit 735ee8582d ]

Quoting reporter:
  In net/netfilter/xt_tcpmss.c (lines 53-68), the TCP option parser reads
 op[i+1] directly without validating the remaining option length.

  If the last byte of the option field is not EOL/NOP (0/1), the code attempts
  to index op[i+1]. In the case where i + 1 == optlen, this causes an
  out-of-bounds read, accessing memory past the optlen boundary
  (either reading beyond the stack buffer _opt or the
  following payload).

Yuto HamaguchiandSasha Levin 89f50775d8 netfilter: nf_conntrack: Add allow_clash to generic protocol handler
[ Upstream commit 8a49fc8d8a ]

The upstream commit, 71d8c47fc6
 ("netfilter: conntrack: introduce clash resolution on insertion race"),
sets allow_clash=true in the UDP/UDPLITE protocol handler
but does not set it in the generic protocol handler.

As a result, packets composed of connectionless protocols at each layer,
such as UDP over IP-in-IP, still drop packets due to conflicts during conntrack insertion.

To resolve this, this patch sets allow_clash in the nf_conntrack_l4proto_generic.

Inseo AnandSasha Levin 7017745068 netfilter: nf_tables: fix use-after-free in nf_tables_addchain()
[ Upstream commit 71e99ee20f ]

nf_tables_addchain() publishes the chain to table->chains via
list_add_tail_rcu() (in nft_chain_add()) before registering hooks.
If nf_tables_register_hook() then fails, the error path calls
nft_chain_del() (list_del_rcu()) followed by nf_tables_chain_destroy()
with no RCU grace period in between.

This creates two use-after-free conditions:

 1) Control-plane: nf_tables_dump_chains() traverses table->chains
    under rcu_read_lock(). A concurrent dump can still be walking
    the chain when the error path frees it.

 2) Packet path: for NFPROTO_INET, nf_register_net_hook() briefly
    installs the IPv4 hook before IPv6 registration fails. Packets
    entering nft_do_chain() via the transient IPv4 hook can still be
    dereferencing chain->blob_gen_X when the error path frees the
    chain.

Add synchronize_rcu() between nft_chain_del() and the chain destroy
so that all RCU readers -- both dump threads and in-flight packet
evaluation -- have finished before the chain is freed.

[ Upstream commit 1e13f27e06 ]

nft_counter_reset() calls u64_stats_add() with a negative value to reset
the counter. This will work on 64bit archs, hence the negative value
added will wrap as a 64bit value which then can wrap the stat counter as
well.

On 32bit archs, the added negative value will wrap as a 32bit value and
_not_ wrapping the stat counter properly. In most cases, this would just
lead to a very large 32bit value being added to the stat counter.

Fix by introducing u64_stats_sub().

[ Upstream commit de8a70cefc ]

Since commit be102eb6a0 ("netfilter: nf_conncount: rework API to use
sk_buff directly"), we skip the adding and trigger a GC when the ct is
confirmed. For connections originated from local to local it doesn't
work because the connection is confirmed on POSTROUTING, therefore
tracking on the INPUT hook is always skipped.

In order to fix this, we check whether skb input ifindex is set to
loopback ifindex. If it is then we fallback on a GC plus track operation
skipping the optimization. This fallback is necessary to avoid
duplicated tracking of a packet train e.g 10 UDP datagrams sent on a
burst when initiating the connection.

Tested with xt_connlimit/nft_connlimit and OVS limit and with a HTTP
server and iperf3 on UDP mode.

As far as I can see nothing bad can happen when NFTA_TARGET/MATCH_NAME
are too large because this calls x_tables helpers which check for the
length, but it seems better to already reject it during netlink parsing.

Rest of the changes avoid silent u8/u16 truncations.

For _TYPE, its expected to be only 1 or 0. In x_tables world, this
variable is set by kernel, for IPT_SO_GET_REVISION_TARGET its 1, for
all others its set to 0.

As older versions of nf_tables permitted any value except 1 to mean 'match',
keep this as-is but sanitize the value for consistency.

[ Upstream commit 21d033e472 ]

After the optimization to only perform one GC per jiffy, a new problem
was introduced. If more than 8 new connections are tracked per jiffy the
list won't be cleaned up fast enough possibly reaching the limit
wrongly.

In order to prevent this issue, only skip the GC if it was already
triggered during the same jiffy and the increment is lower than the
clean up limit. In addition, increase the clean up limit to 64
connections to avoid triggering GC too often and do more effective GCs.

This has been tested using a HTTP server and several

[ Upstream commit 6f93616a73 ]

If a transaction fails the final validation in the commit hook, the table
validation state is changed to NFT_VALIDATE_DO and a replay of the batch is
performed. Every rule insert will then do a graph validation.

This is much slower, but provides better error reporting to the user
because we can point at the rule that introduces the validation issue.

Without this reset the affected table(s) remain in full validation mode,
i.e. on next transaction we start with slow-mode.

This makes the next transaction after a failed incremental update very slow:

commit 4c5c6aa996 upstream.

When calculating the lookup table size, ensure the following
multiplication does not overflow:

- desc->field_len[] maximum value is U8_MAX multiplied by
  NFT_PIPAPO_GROUPS_PER_BYTE(f) that can be 2, worst case.
- NFT_PIPAPO_BUCKETS(f->bb) is 2^8, worst case.
- sizeof(unsigned long), from sizeof(*f->lt), lt in

Then, use check_mul_overflow() to multiply by bucket size and then use
check_add_overflow() to the alignment for avx2 (if needed). Finally, add
lt_size_check_overflow() helper and use it to consolidate this.

Andrew FasanoandGreg Kroah-Hartman 42c574c150 netfilter: nf_tables: fix inverted genmask check in nft_map_catchall_activate()
[ Upstream commit f41c5d1510 ]

nft_map_catchall_activate() has an inverted element activity check
compared to its non-catchall counterpart nft_mapelem_activate() and
compared to what is logically required.

nft_map_catchall_activate() is called from the abort path to re-activate
catchall map elements that were deactivated during a failed transaction.
It should skip elements that are already active (they don't need
re-activation) and process elements that are inactive (they need to be
restored). Instead, the current code does the opposite: it skips inactive
elements and processes active ones.

Compare the non-catchall activate callback, which is correct:

  nft_mapelem_activate():
    if (nft_set_elem_active(ext, iter->genmask))
        return 0; /* skip active, process inactive */

With the buggy catchall version:

  nft_map_catchall_activate():
    if (!nft_set_elem_active(ext, genmask))
        continue; /* skip inactive, process active */

The consequence is that when a DELSET operation is aborted,
nft_setelem_data_activate() is never called for the catchall element.
For NFT_GOTO verdict elements, this means nft_data_hold() is never
called to restore the chain->use reference count. Each abort cycle
permanently decrements chain->use. Once chain->use reaches zero,
DELCHAIN succeeds and frees the chain while catchall verdict elements
still reference it, resulting in a use-after-free.

This is exploitable for local privilege escalation from an unprivileged
user via user namespaces + nftables on distributions that enable
CONFIG_USER_NS and CONFIG_NF_TABLES.

Fix by removing the negation so the check matches nft_mapelem_activate():
skip active elements, process inactive ones.

Currently nf_tables will traverse the entire table (chain graph), starting
from the entry points (base chains), exploring all possible paths
(chain jumps). But there are cases where we could avoid revalidation.

Consider:
1  input -> j2 -> j3
2  input -> j2 -> j3
3  input -> j1 -> j2 -> j3

Then the second rule does not need to revalidate j2, and, by extension j3,
because this was already checked during validation of the first rule.
We need to validate it only for rule 3.

This is needed because chain loop detection also ensures we do not exceed
the jump stack: Just because we know that j2 is cycle free, its last jump
might now exceed the allowed stack size. We also need to update all
reachable chains with the new largest observed call depth.

Care has to be taken to revalidate even if the chain depth won't be an
issue: chain validation also ensures that expressions are not called from
invalid base chains. For example, the masquerade expression can only be
called from NAT postrouting base chains.

Therefore we also need to keep record of the base chain context (type,
hooknum) and revalidate if the chain becomes reachable from a different
hook location.

Florian WestphalandGreg Kroah-Hartman 1816619b2f netfilter: nf_tables: allow loads only when register is initialized
[ Upstream commit 14fb07130c ]

Reject rules where a load occurs from a register that has not seen a store
early in the same rule.

commit 4c905f6740 ("netfilter: nf_tables: initialize registers in
nft_do_chain()")
had to add a unconditional memset to the nftables register space to avoid
leaking stack information to userspace.

This memset shows up in benchmarks. After this change, this commit can
be reverted again.

Note that this breaks userspace compatibility, because theoretically
you can do

  rule 1: reg2 := meta load iif, reg2  == 1 jump ...
  rule 2: reg2 == 2 jump ... // read access with no store in this rule

... after this change this is rejected.

Neither nftables nor iptables-nft generate such rules, each rule is
always standalone.

This resuts in a small increase of nft_ctx structure by sizeof(long).

To cope with hypothetical rulesets like the example above one could emit
on-demand "reg[x] = 0" store when generating the datapath blob in
nf_tables_commit_chain_prepare().

A patch that does this is linked to below.

For now, lets disable this. In nf_tables, a rule is the smallest
unit that can be replaced from userspace, i.e. a hypothetical ruleset
that relies on earlier initialisations of registers can't be changed
at will as register usage would need to be coordinated.

Slavin LiuandGreg Kroah-Hartman 4729ff0581 ipvs: fix ipv4 null-ptr-deref in route error path
[ Upstream commit ad891bb3d0 ]

The IPv4 code path in __ip_vs_get_out_rt() calls dst_link_failure()
without ensuring skb->dev is set, leading to a NULL pointer dereference
in fib_compute_spec_dst() when ipv4_link_failure() attempts to send
ICMP destination unreachable messages.

The issue emerged after commit ed0de45a10 ("ipv4: recompile ip options
in ipv4_link_failure") started calling __ip_options_compile() from
ipv4_link_failure(). This code path eventually calls fib_compute_spec_dst()
which dereferences skb->dev. An attempt was made to fix the NULL skb->dev
dereference in commit 0113d9c9d1 ("ipv4: fix null-deref in
ipv4_link_failure"), but it only addressed the immediate dev_net(skb->dev)
dereference by using a fallback device. The fix was incomplete because
fib_compute_spec_dst() later in the call chain still accesses skb->dev
directly, which remains NULL when IPVS calls dst_link_failure().

The crash occurs when:
1. IPVS processes a packet in NAT mode with a misconfigured destination
2. Route lookup fails in __ip_vs_get_out_rt() before establishing a route
3. The error path calls dst_link_failure(skb) with skb->dev == NULL
4. ipv4_link_failure() → ipv4_send_dest_unreach() →
   __ip_options_compile() → fib_compute_spec_dst()
5. fib_compute_spec_dst() dereferences NULL skb->dev

Apply the same fix used for IPv6 in commit 326bf17ea5 ("ipvs: fix
ipv6 route unreach panic"): set skb->dev from skb_dst(skb)->dev before
calling dst_link_failure().

Fernando Fernandez ManceraandGreg Kroah-Hartman 8286c02fe9 netfilter: nft_connlimit: update the count if add was skipped
[ Upstream commit 69894e5b4c ]

Connlimit expression can be used for all kind of packets and not only
for packets with connection state new. See this ruleset as example:

table ip filter {
        chain input {
                type filter hook input priority filter; policy accept;
                tcp dport 22 ct count over 4 counter
        }
}

Currently, if the connection count goes over the limit the counter will
count the packets. When a connection is closed, the connection count
won't decrement as it should because it is only updated for new
connections due to an optimization on __nf_conncount_add() that prevents
updating the list if the connection is duplicated.

To solve this problem, check whether the connection was skipped and if
so, update the list. Adjust count_tree() too so the same fix is applied
for xt_connlimit.

Fernando Fernandez ManceraandGreg Kroah-Hartman da9f247fb5 netfilter: nf_conncount: rework API to use sk_buff directly
[ Upstream commit be102eb6a0 ]

When using nf_conncount infrastructure for non-confirmed connections a
duplicated track is possible due to an optimization introduced since
commit d265929930 ("netfilter: nf_conncount: reduce unnecessary GC").

In order to fix this introduce a new conncount API that receives
directly an sk_buff struct. It fetches the tuple and zone and the
corresponding ct from it. It comes with both existing conncount variants
nf_conncount_count_skb() and nf_conncount_add_skb(). In addition remove
the old API and adjust all the users to use the new one.

This way, for each sk_buff struct it is possible to check if there is a
ct present and already confirmed. If so, skip the add operation.

[ Upstream commit 134121bfd9 ]

On the netns cleanup path, __ip_vs_ftp_exit() may unregister ip_vs_ftp
before connections with valid cp->app pointers are flushed, leading to a
use-after-free.

Fix this by introducing a global `exiting_module` flag, set to true in
ip_vs_ftp_exit() before unregistering the pernet subsystem. In
__ip_vs_ftp_exit(), skip ip_vs_ftp unregister if called during netns
cleanup (when exiting_module is false) and defer it to
__ip_vs_cleanup_batch(), which unregisters all apps after all connections
are flushed. If called during module exit, unregister ip_vs_ftp

Zhang TengfeiandGreg Kroah-Hartman 54f4da8629 ipvs: Use READ_ONCE/WRITE_ONCE for ipvs->enable
[ Upstream commit 944b6b216c ]

KCSAN reported a data-race on the `ipvs->enable` flag, which is
written in the control path and read concurrently from many other
contexts.

Following a suggestion by Julian, this patch fixes the race by
converting all accesses to use `WRITE_ONCE()/READ_ONCE()`.
This lightweight approach ensures atomic access and acts as a
compiler barrier, preventing unsafe optimizations where the flag
is checked in loops (e.g., in ip_vs_est.c).

Additionally, the `enable` checks in the fast-path hooks
(`ip_vs_in_hook`, `ip_vs_out_hook`, `ip_vs_forward_icmp`) are
removed. These are unnecessary since commit 857ca89711
("ipvs: register hooks only with services"). The `enable=0`
condition they check for can only occur in two rare and non-fatal
scenarios: 1) after hooks are registered but before the flag is set,
and 2) after hooks are unregistered on cleanup_net. In the worst
case, a single packet might be mishandled (e.g., dropped), which
does not lead to a system crash or data corruption. Adding a check
in the performance-critical fast-path to handle this harmless
condition is not a worthwhile trade-off.

Florian WestphalandGreg Kroah-Hartman 30cf811058 netfilter: ctnetlink: fix refcount leak on table dump
[ Upstream commit de788b2e62 ]

There is a reference count leak in ctnetlink_dump_table():
      if (res < 0) {
                nf_conntrack_get(&ct->ct_general); // HERE
                cb->args[1] = (unsigned long)ct;
                ...

While its very unlikely, its possible that ct == last.
If this happens, then the refcount of ct was already incremented.
This 2nd increment is never undone.

This prevents the conntrack object from being released, which in turn
keeps prevents cnet->count from dropping back to 0.

This will then block the netns dismantle (or conntrack rmmod) as
nf_conntrack_cleanup_net_list() will wait forever.

This can be reproduced by running conntrack_resize.sh selftest in a loop.
It takes ~20 minutes for me on a preemptible kernel on average before
I see a runaway kworker spinning in nf_conntrack_cleanup_net_list.

One fix would to change this to:
        if (res < 0) {
		if (ct != last)
	                nf_conntrack_get(&ct->ct_general);

But this reference counting isn't needed in the first place.
We can just store a cookie value instead.

A followup patch will do the same for ctnetlink_exp_dump_table,
it looks to me as if this has the same problem and like
ctnetlink_dump_table, we only need a 'skip hint', not the actual
object so we can apply the same cookie strategy there as well.

Florian WestphalandGreg Kroah-Hartman 76179961c4 netfilter: nf_conntrack: fix crash due to removal of uninitialised entry
[ Upstream commit 2d72afb340 ]

A crash in conntrack was reported while trying to unlink the conntrack
entry from the hash bucket list:
    [exception RIP: __nf_ct_delete_from_lists+172]
    [..]
 #7 [ff539b5a2b043aa0] nf_ct_delete at ffffffffc124d421 [nf_conntrack]
 #8 [ff539b5a2b043ad0] nf_ct_gc_expired at ffffffffc124d999 [nf_conntrack]
 #9 [ff539b5a2b043ae0] __nf_conntrack_find_get at ffffffffc124efbc [nf_conntrack]
    [..]

The nf_conn struct is marked as allocated from slab but appears to be in
a partially initialised state:

 ct hlist pointer is garbage; looks like the ct hash value
 (hence crash).
 ct->status is equal to IPS_CONFIRMED|IPS_DYING, which is expected
 ct->timeout is 30000 (=30s), which is unexpected.

Everything else looks like normal udp conntrack entry. If we ignore
ct->status and pretend its 0, the entry matches those that are newly
allocated but not yet inserted into the hash:
  - ct hlist pointers are overloaded and store/cache the raw tuple hash
  - ct->timeout matches the relative time expected for a new udp flow
    rather than the absolute 'jiffies' value.

If it were not for the presence of IPS_CONFIRMED,
__nf_conntrack_find_get() would have skipped the entry.

Theory is that we did hit following race:

cpu x 			cpu y			cpu z
 found entry E found entry E
 E is expired		<preemption>
 nf_ct_delete()
 return E to rcu slab
					init_conntrack
					E is re-inited,
					ct->status set to 0
					reply tuplehash hnnode.pprev
					stores hash value.

cpu y found E right before it was deleted on cpu x.
E is now re-inited on cpu z. cpu y was preempted before
checking for expiry and/or confirm bit.

					->refcnt set to 1
					E now owned by skb
					->timeout set to 30000

If cpu y were to resume now, it would observe E as
expired but would skip E due to missing CONFIRMED bit.

					nf_conntrack_confirm gets called
					sets: ct->status |= CONFIRMED
					This is wrong: E is not yet added
					to hashtable.

cpu y resumes, it observes E as expired but CONFIRMED:
			<resumes>
			nf_ct_expired()
			 -> yes (ct->timeout is 30s)
			confirmed bit set.

cpu y will try to delete E from the hashtable:
			nf_ct_delete() -> set DYING bit
			__nf_ct_delete_from_lists

Even this scenario doesn't guarantee a crash:
cpu z still holds the table bucket lock(s) so y blocks:

			wait for spinlock held by z

					CONFIRMED is set but there is no
					guarantee ct will be added to hash:
					"chaintoolong" or "clash resolution"
					logic both skip the insert step.
					reply hnnode.pprev still stores the
					hash value.

					unlocks spinlock
					return NF_DROP
			<unblocks, then
			 crashes on hlist_nulls_del_rcu pprev>

In case CPU z does insert the entry into the hashtable, cpu y will unlink
E again right away but no crash occurs.

Without 'cpu y' race, 'garbage' hlist is of no consequence:
ct refcnt remains at 1, eventually skb will be free'd and E gets
destroyed via: nf_conntrack_put -> nf_conntrack_destroy -> nf_ct_destroy.

To resolve this, move the IPS_CONFIRMED assignment after the table
insertion but before the unlock.

Pablo points out that the confirm-bit-store could be reordered to happen
before hlist add resp. the timeout fixup, so switch to set_bit and
before_atomic memory barrier to prevent this.

It doesn't matter if other CPUs can observe a newly inserted entry right
before the CONFIRMED bit was set:

Such event cannot be distinguished from above "E is the old incarnation"
case: the entry will be skipped.

Also change nf_ct_should_gc() to first check the confirmed bit.

The gc sequence is:
 1. Check if entry has expired, if not skip to next entry
 2. Obtain a reference to the expired entry.
 3. Call nf_ct_should_gc() to double-check step 1.

nf_ct_should_gc() is thus called only for entries that already failed an
expiry check. After this patch, once the confirmed bit check passes
ct->timeout has been altered to reflect the absolute 'best before' date
instead of a relative time. Step 3 will therefore not remove the entry.

Without this change to nf_ct_should_gc() we could still get this sequence:

 1. Check if entry has expired.
 2. Obtain a reference.
 3. Call nf_ct_should_gc() to double-check step 1:
    4 - entry is still observed as expired
    5 - meanwhile, ct->timeout is corrected to absolute value on other CPU
      and confirm bit gets set
    6 - confirm bit is seen
    7 - valid entry is removed again

First do check 6), then 4) so the gc expiry check always picks up either
confirmed bit unset (entry gets skipped) or expiry re-check failure for
re-inited conntrack objects.

This change cannot be backported to releases before 5.19. Without
commit 8a75a2c174 ("netfilter: conntrack: remove unconfirmed list")
|= IPS_CONFIRMED line cannot be moved without further changes.

Florian WestphalandGreg Kroah-Hartman 1c7a023b0c netfilter: nf_nat: also check reverse tuple to obtain clashing entry
[ Upstream commit 50d9ce9679 ]

The logic added in the blamed commit was supposed to only omit nat source
port allocation if neither the existing nor the new entry are subject to
NAT.

However, its not enough to lookup the conntrack based on the proposed
tuple, we must also check the reverse direction.

Otherwise there are esoteric cases where the collision is in the reverse
direction because that colliding connection has a port rewrite, but the
new entry doesn't. In this case, we only check the new entry and then
erronously conclude that no clash exists anymore.

 The existing (udp) tuple is:
  a:p -> b:P, with nat translation to s:P, i.e. pure daddr rewrite,
  reverse tuple in conntrack table is s:P -> a:p.

When another UDP packet is sent directly to s, i.e. a:p->s:P, this is
correctly detected as a colliding entry: tuple is taken by existing reply
tuple in reverse direction.

But the colliding conntrack is only searched for with unreversed
direction, and we can't find such entry matching a:p->s:P.

The incorrect conclusion is that the clashing entry has timed out and
that no port address translation is required.

Such conntrack will then be discarded at nf_confirm time because the
proposed reverse direction clashes with an existing mapping in the
conntrack table.

Search for the reverse tuple too, this will then check the NAT bits of
the colliding entry and triggers port reallocation.

Followp patch extends nft_nat.sh selftest to cover this scenario.

The IPS_SEQ_ADJUST change is also a bug fix:
Instead of checking for SEQ_ADJ this tested for SEEN_REPLY and ASSURED
by accident -- _BIT is only for use with the test_bit() API.

This bug has little consequence in practice, because the sequence number
adjustments are only useful for TCP which doesn't support clash resolution.

The existing test case (conntrack_reverse_clash.sh) exercise a race
condition path (parallel conntrack creation on different CPUs), so
the colliding entries have neither SEEN_REPLY nor ASSURED set.

Thanks to Yafang Shao and Shaun Brady for an initial investigation
of this bug.

Nicolas BouchinetandGreg Kroah-Hartman 89947eea8f netfilter: conntrack: Bound nf_conntrack sysctl writes
[ Upstream commit 8b6861390f ]

nf_conntrack_max and nf_conntrack_expect_max sysctls were authorized to
be written any negative value, which would then be stored in the
unsigned int variables nf_conntrack_max and nf_ct_expect_max variables.

While the do_proc_dointvec_conv function is supposed to limit writing
handled by proc_dointvec proc_handler to INT_MAX. Such a negative value
being written in an unsigned int leads to a very high value, exceeding
this limit.

Moreover, the nf_conntrack_expect_max sysctl documentation specifies the
minimum value is 1.

The proc_handlers have thus been updated to proc_dointvec_minmax in
order to specify the following write bounds :

* Bound nf_conntrack_max sysctl writings between SYSCTL_ZERO
  and SYSCTL_INT_MAX.

* Bound nf_conntrack_expect_max sysctl writings between SYSCTL_ONE
  and SYSCTL_INT_MAX as defined in the sysctl documentation.

With this patch applied, sysctl writes outside the defined in the bound
will thus lead to a write error :
