Justin WorrellandGreg Kroah-Hartman 9339b4e75a SUNRPC: call xs_sock_process_cmsg for all cmsg
[ Upstream commit 9559d2fffd ]

xs_sock_recv_cmsg was failing to call xs_sock_process_cmsg for any cmsg
type other than TLS_RECORD_TYPE_ALERT (TLS_RECORD_TYPE_DATA, and other
values not handled.) Based on my reading of the previous commit
(cc5d5908: sunrpc: fix client side handling of tls alerts), it looks
like only iov_iter_revert should be conditional on TLS_RECORD_TYPE_ALERT
(but that other cmsg types should still call xs_sock_process_cmsg). On
my machine, I was unable to connect (over mtls) to an NFS share hosted
on FreeBSD. With this patch applied, I am able to mount the share again.

[ Upstream commit 5c70eb5c59 ]

While kernel sockets are dismantled during pernet_operations->exit(),
their freeing can be delayed by any tx packets still held in qdisc
or device queues, due to skb_set_owner_w() prior calls.

This then trigger the following warning from ref_tracker_dir_exit() [1]

To fix this, make sure that kernel sockets own a reference on net->passive.

Add sk_net_refcnt_upgrade() helper, used whenever a kernel socket
is converted to a refcounted one.

Olga KornievskaiaandGreg Kroah-Hartman b1df394621 sunrpc: fix handling of server side tls alerts
commit bee47cb026 upstream.

Scott Mayhew discovered a security exploit in NFS over TLS in
tls_alert_recv() due to its assumption it can read data from
the msg iterator's kvec..

kTLS implementation splits TLS non-data record payload between
the control message buffer (which includes the type such as TLS
aler or TLS cipher change) and the rest of the payload (say TLS
alert's level/description) which goes into the msg payload buffer.

This patch proposes to rework how control messages are setup and
used by sock_recvmsg().

If no control message structure is setup, kTLS layer will read and
process TLS data record types. As soon as it encounters a TLS control
message, it would return an error. At that point, NFS can setup a
kvec backed msg buffer and read in the control message such as a
TLS alert. Msg iterator can advance the kvec pointer as a part of
the copy process thus we need to revert the iterator before calling
into the tls_alert_recv.

[ Upstream commit cc5d59081f ]

A security exploit was discovered in NFS over TLS in tls_alert_recv

Instead, this patch proposes the rework how control messages are

If no control message structure is setup, kTLS layer will read and

Nikhil JhaandGreg Kroah-Hartman c3616dfddf sunrpc: don't immediately retransmit on seqno miss
[ Upstream commit fadc0f3bb2 ]

RFC2203 requires that retransmitted messages use a new gss sequence
number, but the same XID. This means that if the server is just slow
(e.x. overloaded), the client might receive a response using an older
seqno than the one it has recorded.

Currently, Linux's client immediately retransmits in this case. However,
this leads to a lot of wasted retransmits until the server eventually
responds faster than the client can resend.

Client -> SEQ 1 -> Server
Client -> SEQ 2 -> Server
Client <- SEQ 1 <- Server (misses, expecting seqno = 2)
Client -> SEQ 3 -> Server (immediate retransmission on miss)
Client <- SEQ 2 <- Server (misses, expecting seqno = 3)
Client -> SEQ 4 -> Server (immediate retransmission on miss)
... and so on ...

This commit makes it so that we ignore messages with bad checksums
due to seqnum mismatch, and rely on the usual timeout behavior for
retransmission instead of doing so immediately.

Jeff LaytonandGreg Kroah-Hartman 599c489eea sunrpc: handle SVC_GARBAGE during svc auth processing as auth error
commit 94d10a4dba upstream.

tianshuo han reported a remotely-triggerable crash if the client sends a
kernel RPC server a specially crafted packet. If decoding the RPC reply
fails in such a way that SVC_GARBAGE is returned without setting the
rq_accept_statp pointer, then that pointer can be dereferenced and a
value stored there.

If it's the first time the thread has processed an RPC, then that
pointer will be set to NULL and the kernel will crash. In other cases,
it could create a memory scribble.

The server sunrpc code treats a SVC_GARBAGE return from svc_authenticate
or pg_authenticate as if it should send a GARBAGE_ARGS reply. RFC 5531
says that if authentication fails that the RPC should be rejected
instead with a status of AUTH_ERR.

Handle a SVC_GARBAGE return as an AUTH_ERROR, with a reason of
AUTH_BADCRED instead of returning GARBAGE_ARGS in that case. This
sidesteps the whole problem of touching the rpc_accept_statp pointer in
this situation and avoids the crash.

Chuck LeverandGreg Kroah-Hartman 5ee9a07b45 SUNRPC: Prevent hang on NFS mount with xprtsec=[m]tls
commit 0bd2f6b899 upstream.

Engineers at Hammerspace noticed that sometimes mounting with
"xprtsec=tls" hangs for a minute or so, and then times out, even
when the NFS server is reachable and responsive.

kTLS shuts off data_ready callbacks if strp->msg_ready is set to
mitigate data_ready callbacks when a full TLS record is not yet
ready to be read from the socket.

Normally msg_ready is clear when the first TLS record arrives on
a socket. However, I observed that sometimes tls_setsockopt() sets
strp->msg_ready, and that prevents forward progress because
tls_data_ready() becomes a no-op.

Moreover, Jakub says: "If there's a full record queued at the time
when [tlshd] passes the socket back to the kernel, it's up to the
reader to read the already queued data out." So SunRPC cannot
expect a data_ready call when ingress data is already waiting.

Add an explicit poll after SunRPC's upper transport is set up to
pick up any data that arrived after the TLS handshake but before
transport set-up is complete.

Chuck LeverandGreg Kroah-Hartman 225b88642a Revert "SUNRPC: Reduce thread wake-up rate when receiving large RPC messages"
commit 966a675da8 upstream.

I noticed that a handful of NFSv3 fstests were taking an
unexpectedly long time to run. Troubleshooting showed that the
server's TCP window closed and never re-opened, which caused the
client to trigger an RPC retransmit timeout after 180 seconds.

The client's recovery action was to establish a fresh connection
and retransmit the timed-out requests. This worked, but it adds a
long delay.

I tracked the problem to the commit that attempted to reduce the
rate at which the network layer delivers TCP socket data_ready
callbacks. Under most circumstances this change worked as expected,
but for NFSv3, which has no session or other type of throttling, it
can overwhelm the receiver on occasion.

I'm sure I could tweak the lowat settings, but the small benefit
doesn't seem worth the bother. Just revert it.

ip netns exec netns_1 /root/iptables -A OUTPUT -d 11.11.0.254 -p tcp \
	--tcp-flags FIN FIN -j DROP

(note: In my environment, a DESTROY_CLIENTID operation is always sent
immediately, breaking the nfs tcp connection.)
ip netns exec netns_1 timeout -s 9 300 mount -t nfs -o proto=tcp,vers=4.1 \
	11.11.0.254:/mnt/nfsshare /mnt/nfs/netns_1

ip netns del netns_1

The reason here is that the tcp socket in netns_1 (nfs side) has been
shutdown and closed (done in xs_destroy), but the FIN message (with ack)
is discarded, and the nfsd side keeps sending retransmission messages.
As a result, when the tcp sock in netns_1 processes the received message,
it sends the message (FIN message) in the sending queue, and the tcp timer
is re-established. When the network namespace is deleted, the net structure
accessed by tcp's timer handler function causes problems.

To fix this problem, let's hold netns refcnt for the tcp kernel socket as
done in other modules. This is an ugly hack which can easily be backported
to earlier kernels. A proper fix which cleans up the interfaces will
follow, but may not be so easy to backport.

Benjamin CoddingtonandGreg Kroah-Hartman 931be6b738 SUNRPC: timeout and cancel TLS handshake with -ETIMEDOUT
[ Upstream commit d7bdd849ef ]

We've noticed a situation where an unstable TCP connection can cause the
TLS handshake to timeout waiting for userspace to complete it. When this
happens, we don't want to return from xs_tls_handshake_sync() with zero, as
this will cause the upper xprt to be set CONNECTED, and subsequent attempts
to transmit will be returned with -EPIPE. The sunrpc machine does not
recover from this situation and will spin attempting to transmit.

The return value of tls_handshake_cancel() can be used to detect a race
with completion:

 * tls_handshake_cancel - cancel a pending handshake
 * Return values:
 * %true - Uncompleted handshake request was canceled
 * %false - Handshake request already completed or not found

If true, we do not want the upper xprt to be connected, so return
-ETIMEDOUT. If false, its possible the handshake request was lost and
that may be the reason for our timeout. Again we do not want the upper
xprt to be connected, so return -ETIMEDOUT.

Ensure that we alway return an error from xs_tls_handshake_sync() if we
call tls_handshake_cancel().

NeilBrownandGreg Kroah-Hartman d428de979b sunrpc: handle -ENOTCONN in xs_tcp_setup_socket()
[ Upstream commit 10f0740234 ]

xs_tcp_finish_connecting() can return -ENOTCONN but the switch statement
in xs_tcp_setup_socket() treats that as an unhandled error.

If we treat it as a known error it would propagate back to
call_connect_status() which does handle that error code. This appears
to be the intention of the commit (given below) which added -ENOTCONN as
a return status for xs_tcp_finish_connecting().

So add -ENOTCONN to the switch statement as an error to pass through to
the caller.

Benjamin CoddingtonandGreg Kroah-Hartman c265240444 SUNRPC: Fix a race to wake a sync task
[ Upstream commit ed0172af5d ]

We've observed NFS clients with sync tasks sleeping in __rpc_execute
waiting on RPC_TASK_QUEUED that have not responded to a wake-up from
rpc_make_runnable(). I suspect this problem usually goes unnoticed,
because on a busy client the task will eventually be re-awoken by another
task completion or xprt event. However, if the state manager is draining
the slot table, a sync task missing a wake-up can result in a hung client.

We've been able to prove that the waker in rpc_make_runnable() successfully
calls wake_up_bit() (ie- there's no race to tk_runstate), but the
wake_up_bit() call fails to wake the waiter. I suspect the waker is
missing the load of the bit's wait_queue_head, so waitqueue_active() is
false. There are some very helpful comments about this problem above
wake_up_bit(), prepare_to_wait(), and waitqueue_active().

Fix this by inserting smp_mb__after_atomic() before the wake_up_bit(),
which pairs with prepare_to_wait() calling set_current_state().

[ Upstream commit 6258cf25d5 ]

Prior to the commit identified below, call_transmit_status() would
handle -EPERM and other errors related to an unreachable server by
falling through to call_status() which added a 3-second delay and
handled the failure as a timeout.

Since that commit, call_transmit_status() falls through to
handle_bind(). For UDP this moves straight on to handle_connect() and
handle_transmit() so we immediately retransmit - and likely get the same
error.

This results in an indefinite loop in __rpc_execute() which triggers a
soft-lockup warning.

For the errors that indicate an unreachable server,
call_transmit_status() should fall back to call_status() as it did
before. This cannot cause the thundering herd that the previous patch
was avoiding, as the call_status() will insert a delay.

Avoid FastReg operations getting MW_BIND_ERR after a reconnect.

rpcrdma_reqs_reset() is called on transport tear-down to get each

MRs on req->rl_registered are waiting for a FastReg, are already
registered, or are waiting for invalidation. If the transport is

When using a BPF program on kernel_connect(), the call can return -EPERM. This
causes xs_tcp_setup_socket() to loop forever, filling up the syslog and causing
the kernel to potentially freeze up.

Neil suggested:

This will propagate -EPERM up into other layers which might not be ready
to handle it. It might be safer to map EPERM to an error we would be more
likely to expect from the network system - such as ECONNREFUSED or ENETDOWN.

ECONNREFUSED as error seems reasonable. For programs setting a different error
can be out of reach (see handling in 4fbac77d2d) in particular on kernels
which do not have f10d059661 ("bpf: Make BPF_PROG_RUN_ARRAY return -err
instead of allow boolean"), thus given that it is better to simply remap for
consistent behavior. UDP does handle EPERM in xs_udp_send_request().

Dan AloniandGreg Kroah-Hartman f3a8f8670f sunrpc: fix NFSACL RPC retry on soft mount
[ Upstream commit 0dc9f43002 ]

It used to be quite awhile ago since 1b63a75180 ('SUNRPC: Refactor
rpc_clone_client()'), in 2012, that `cl_timeout` was copied in so that
all mount parameters propagate to NFSACL clients. However since that
change, if mount options as follows are given:

    soft,timeo=50,retrans=16,vers=3

The resultant NFSACL client receives:

    cl_softrtry: 1
    cl_timeout: to_initval=60000, to_maxval=60000, to_increment=0, to_retries=2, to_exponential=0

These values lead to NFSACL operations not being retried under the
condition of transient network outages with soft mount. Instead, getacl
call fails after 60 seconds with EIO.

The simple fix is to pass the existing client's `cl_timeout` as the new
client timeout.

Based on the way that the ->pages[] array is constructed in
gss_read_proxy_verf(), we know that once the loop encounters a NULL
page pointer, the remaining array elements must also be NULL.

Chuck LeverandGreg Kroah-Hartman 1ba1291172 SUNRPC: Fix a slow server-side memory leak with RPC-over-TCP
[ Upstream commit 05258a0a69 ]

Jan Schunk reports that his small NFS servers suffer from memory
exhaustion after just a few days. A bisect shows that commit
e18e157bb5 ("SUNRPC: Send RPC message on TCP with a single
sock_sendmsg() call") is the first bad commit.

That commit assumed that sock_sendmsg() releases all the pages in
the underlying bio_vec array, but the reality is that it doesn't.
svc_xprt_release() releases the rqst's response pages, but the
record marker page fragment isn't one of those, so it is never
released.

This is a narrow fix that can be applied to stable kernels. A
more extensive fix is in the works.

The problem seems to be that two out of three callers aren't taking the
rcu_read_lock() before calling the list_for_each_entry_rcu() function in
rpc_xprt_switch_has_addr(). I fix this by having
rpc_xprt_switch_has_addr() unconditionaly take the rcu_read_lock(),
which is okay to do recursively in the case that the lock has already
been taken by a caller.

Fix this by reverting now. At a later point this minor optimization,
and the deceptive labeling of the sp_id field, can be revisited.

felixandGreg Kroah-Hartman cc2e7ebbeb SUNRPC: Fix RPC client cleaned up the freed pipefs dentries
[ Upstream commit bfca5fb4e9 ]

RPC client pipefs dentries cleanup is in separated rpc_remove_pipedir()
workqueue, which takes care about pipefs superblock locking.
In some special scenarios, when kernel frees the pipefs sb of the
current client and immediately alloctes a new pipefs sb,
rpc_remove_pipedir function would misjudge the existence of pipefs
sb which is not the one it used to hold. As a result,
the rpc_remove_pipedir would clean the released freed pipefs dentries.

To fix this issue, rpc_remove_pipedir should check whether the
current pipefs sb is consistent with the original pipefs sb.
