This commit introduced in v4.0 prevents building FS_DAX on 32-bit ARM,
even on ARMv7 which does not have virtually aliased data caches:
commit d92576f116 ("dax: does not work correctly with virtual aliasing caches")
Even though it used to work fine before.
The root of the issue here is the fact that DAX was never designed to
handle virtually aliasing data caches (VIVT and VIPT with aliasing data
cache). It touches the pages through their linear mapping, which is not
consistent with the userspace mappings with virtually aliasing data
caches.
This patch series introduces cpu_dcache_is_aliasing() with the new
Kconfig option ARCH_HAS_CPU_CACHE_ALIASING and implements it for all
architectures. The implementation of cpu_dcache_is_aliasing() is either
evaluated to a constant at compile-time or a runtime check, which is
what is needed on ARM.
With this we can basically narrow down the list of architectures which
are unsupported by DAX to those which are really affected.
This patch (of 9):
When building a kernel with CONFIG_DAX=n, all uses of set_dax_nocache()
and set_dax_nomc() need to be either within regions of code or compile
units which are explicitly not compiled, or they need to rely on compiler
optimizations to eliminate calls to those undefined symbols.
It appears that at least the openrisc and loongarch architectures don't
end up eliminating those undefined symbols even if they are provably
within code which is eliminated due to conditional branches depending on
constants.
Implement empty static inline functions for set_dax_nocache() and
set_dax_nomc() in CONFIG_DAX=n to ensure those undefined references are
removed.

Remove the unnecessary encoding of page order into an enum and pass the
page order directly. That lets us get rid of pe_order().
The switch constructs have to be changed to if/else constructs to prevent
GCC from warning on builds with 3-level page tables where PMD_ORDER and
PUD_ORDER have the same value.
If you are looking at this commit because your driver stopped compiling,
look at the previous commit as well and audit your driver to be sure it
doesn't depend on mmap_lock being held in its ->huge_fault method.

When multiple processes mmap() a dax file, then at some point,
a process issues a 'load' and consumes a hwpoison, the process
receives a SIGBUS with si_code = BUS_MCEERR_AR and with si_lsb
set for the poison scope. Soon after, any other process issues
a 'load' to the poisoned page (that is unmapped from the kernel
side by memory_failure), it receives a SIGBUS with
si_code = BUS_ADRERR and without valid si_lsb.
This is confusing to user, and is different from page fault due
to poison in RAM memory, also some helpful information is lost.
Channel dax backend driver's poison detection to the filesystem
such that instead of reporting VM_FAULT_SIGBUS, it could report
VM_FAULT_HWPOISON.
If user level block IO syscalls fail due to poison, the errno will
be converted to EIO to maintain block API consistency.

In preparation for the CXL region driver to take over the responsibility
of registering device-dax instances for CXL regions, move the
registration of "hmem" devices to dax_hmem.ko.
Previously the builtin component of this enabling
(drivers/dax/hmem/device.o) would register platform devices for each
address range and trigger the dax_hmem.ko module to load and attach
device-dax instances to those devices. Now, the ranges are collected
from the HMAT and EFI memory map walking, but the device creation is
deferred. A new "hmem_platform" device is created which triggers
dax_hmem.ko to load and register the platform devices.

Patch series "v14 fsdax-rmap + v11 fsdax-reflink", v2.
The patchset fsdax-rmap is aimed to support shared pages tracking for
fsdax.
It moves owner tracking from dax_assocaite_entry() to pmem device driver,
by introducing an interface ->memory_failure() for struct pagemap. This
interface is called by memory_failure() in mm, and implemented by pmem
device.
Then call holder operations to find the filesystem which the corrupted
data located in, and call filesystem handler to track files or metadata
associated with this page.
Finally we are able to try to fix the corrupted data in filesystem and do
other necessary processing, such as killing processes who are using the
files affected.

The patchset fsdax-reflink attempts to add CoW support for fsdax, and
takes XFS, which has both reflink and fsdax features, as an example.
One of the key mechanisms needed to be implemented in fsdax is CoW. Copy
the data from srcmap before we actually write data to the destination
iomap. And we just copy range in which data won't be changed.
Another mechanism is range comparison. In page cache case, readpage() is
used to load data on disk to page cache in order to be able to compare
data. In fsdax case, readpage() does not work. So, we need another
compare data with direct access support.
With the two mechanisms implemented in fsdax, we are able to make reflink
and fsdax work together in XFS.
This patch (of 14):
To easily track filesystem from a pmem device, we introduce a holder for
dax_device structure, and also its operation. This holder is used to
remember who is using this dax_device:
- When it is the backend of a filesystem, the holder will be the
instance of this filesystem.
- When this pmem device is one of the targets in a mapped device, the
holder will be this mapped device. In this case, the mapped device
has its own dax_device and it will follow the first rule. So that we
can finally track to the filesystem we needed.
The holder and holder_ops will be set when filesystem is being mounted,
or an target device is being activated.

Introduce dax_recovery_write() operation. The function is used to
recover a dax range that contains poison. Typical use case is when
a user process receives a SIGBUS with si_code BUS_MCEERR_AR
indicating poison(s) in a dax range, in response, the user process
issues a pwrite() to the page-aligned dax range, thus clears the
poison and puts valid data in the range.

These methods indirect the actual DAX read/write path. In the end pmem
uses magic flush and mc safe variants and fuse and dcssblk use plain ones
while device mapper picks redirects to the underlying device.
Add set_dax_nocache() and set_dax_nomc() APIs to control which copy
routines are used to remove indirect call from the read/write fast path
as well as a lot of boilerplate code.

Unshare the DAX and iomap buffered I/O page zeroing code. This code
previously did a IS_DAX check deep inside the iomap code, which in
fact was the only DAX check in the code. Instead move these checks
into the callers. Most callers already have DAX special casing anyway
and XFS will need it for reflink support as well.

Pull fuse updates from Miklos Szeredi:
- Support directly accessing host page cache from virtiofs. This can
improve I/O performance for various workloads, as well as reducing
the memory requirement by eliminating double caching. Thanks to Vivek
Goyal for doing most of the work on this.
- Allow automatic submounting inside virtiofs. This allows unique
st_dev/ st_ino values to be assigned inside the guest to files
residing on different filesystems on the host. Thanks to Max Reitz

refactoring to make iomap workable with btrfs' fsync locking model,
cleanups in preparation for adding THP support for filesystems, and
fixing a data corruption issue for blocksize < pagesize filesystems.
Summary:
- Don't WARN_ON weird states that unprivileged users can create.
- Don't invalidate page cache when direct writes want to fall back to
buffered.
- Fix some problems when readahead ios fail.
- Fix a problem where inline data pages weren't getting flushed
during an unshare operation.
- Rework iomap to support arbitrarily many blocks per page in
preparation to support THP for the page cache.
- Fix a bug in the blocksize < pagesize buffered io path where we

Pass the full length to iomap_zero() and dax_iomap_zero(), and have
them return how many bytes they actually handled. This is preparatory
work for handling THP, although it looks like DAX could actually take

DM was calling generic_fsdax_supported() to determine whether a device
referenced in the DM table supports DAX. However this is a helper for "leaf" device drivers so that
they don't have to duplicate common generic checks. High level code
should call dax_supported() helper which that calls into appropriate
helper for the particular device. This problem manifested itself as
kernel messages:

when lvm2-testsuite run in cases where a DM device was stacked on top of
another DM device.

virtiofs device has a range of memory which is mapped into file inodes
using dax. This memory is mapped in qemu on host and maps different
sections of real file on host. Size of this memory is limited
(determined by administrator) and depending on filesystem size, we will
soon reach a situation where all the memory is in use and we need to
reclaim some.
As part of reclaim process, we will need to make sure that there are
no active references to pages (taken by get_user_pages()) on the memory
range we are trying to reclaim. I am planning to use
dax_layout_busy_page() for this. But in current form this is per inode
and scans through all the pages of the inode.
We want to reclaim only a portion of memory (say 2MB page). So we want
to make sure that only that 2MB range of pages do not have any
references (and don't want to unmap all the pages of inode).
Hence, create a range version of this function named
dax_layout_busy_page_range() which can be used to pass a range which
needs to be unmapped.

Add a dax operation zero_page_range, to zero a page. This will also clear any
known poison in the page being zeroed.
As of now, zeroing of one page is allowed in a single call. There
are no callers which are trying to zero more than a page in a single call.
Once we grow the callers which zero more than a page in single call, we
can add that support. Primary reason for not doing that yet is that this
will add little complexity in dm implementation where a range might be
spanning multiple underlying targets and one will have to split the range
into multiple sub ranges and call zero_page_range() on individual targets.

Looks like nobody is using fs_dax_get_by_host() except fs_dax_get_by_bdev()
and it can easily use dax_get_by_host() instead.
IIUC, fs_dax_get_by_host() was only introduced so that one could compile
with CONFIG_FS_DAX=n and CONFIG_DAX=m. fs_dax_get_by_bdev() achieves
the same purpose and hence it looks like fs_dax_get_by_host() is not
needed anymore.

As of now dax_writeback_mapping_range() takes "struct block_device" as a
parameter and dax_dev is searched from bdev name. This also involves taking
a fresh reference on dax_dev and putting that reference at the end of
function.
We are developing a new filesystem virtio-fs and using dax to access host
page cache directly. But there is no block device. IOW, we want to make
use of dax but want to get rid of this assumption that there is always
a block device associated with dax_dev.
So pass in "struct dax_device" as parameter instead of bdev.
ext2/ext4/xfs are current users and they already have a reference on
dax_device. So there is no need to take reference and drop reference to
dax_device on each call of this function.

This patch introduces 'daxdev_mapping_supported' helper
which checks if 'MAP_SYNC' is supported with filesystem
mapping. It also checks if corresponding dax_device is
synchronous. Virtio pmem device is asynchronous and
does not not support VM_SYNC.

This patch adds 'DAXDEV_SYNC' flag which is set
for nd_region doing synchronous flush. This later
is used to disable MAP_SYNC functionality for
ext4 & xfs filesystem for devices don't support
synchronous flush.

Pankaj reports that starting with commit ad428cdb52 "dax: Check the
end of the block-device capacity with dax_direct_access()" device-mapper
no longer allows dax operation. This results from the stricter checks in
__bdev_dax_supported() that validate that the start and end of a
block-device map to the same 'pagemap' instance.
Teach the dax-core and device-mapper to validate the 'pagemap' on a
per-target basis. This is accomplished by refactoring the
bdev_dax_supported() internals into generic_fsdax_supported() which
takes a sector range to validate. Consequently generic_fsdax_supported()
is suitable to be used in a device-mapper ->iterate_devices() callback.
A new ->dax_supported() operation is added to allow composite devices to
split and route upper-level bdev_dax_supported() requests.

Internal to dax_unlock_mapping_entry(), dax_unlock_entry() is used to
store a replacement entry in the Xarray at the given xas-index with the
DAX_LOCKED bit clear. When called, dax_unlock_entry() expects the unlocked
value of the entry relative to the current Xarray state to be specified.
In most contexts dax_unlock_entry() is operating in the same scope as
the matched dax_lock_entry(). However, in the dax_unlock_mapping_entry()
case the implementation needs to recall the original entry. In the case
where the original entry is a 'pmd' entry it is possible that the pfn
performed to do the lookup is misaligned to the value retrieved in the
Xarray.
Change the api to return the unlock cookie from dax_lock_page() and pass
it to dax_unlock_page(). This fixes a bug where dax_unlock_page() was
assuming that the page was PMD-aligned if the entry was a PMD entry with
signatures like:

In preparation for implementing support for memory poison (media error)
handling via dax mappings, implement a lock_page() equivalent. Poison
error handling requires rmap and needs guarantees that the page->mapping
association is maintained / valid (inode not freed) for the duration of
the lookup.
In the device-dax case it is sufficient to simply hold a dev_pagemap
reference. In the filesystem-dax case we need to use the entry lock.
Export the entry lock via dax_lock_mapping_entry() that uses
rcu_read_lock() to protect against the inode being freed, and
revalidates the page->mapping association under xa_lock().
