Farhad AlemiandGreg Kroah-Hartman 4b06449384 cgroup/cpuset: rebind mm mempolicy to effective_mems, not mems_allowed
commit b983c56426 upstream.

Creating a child cpuset where cpuset.mems is never set leads to a div/0
when a VMA mempolicy with MPOL_F_RELATIVE_NODES rebinds in response to a
CPU hotplug event.

Reproduction steps:
 1) Create a cgroup w/ cpuset controls (do not set cpuset.mems)
 2) Move the task into the child cpuset
 3) Create a VMA mempolicy for that task with MPOL_F_RELATIVE_NODES
 4) unplug and hotplug a cpu
      echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online
      echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online
 5) mempolicy rebind does a div/0 in mpol_relative_nodemask on the
    call to __nodes_fold()

The cpuset code passes (cs->mems_allowed) which is not guaranteed to have
nodes to the rebind routine. Use cs->effective_mems instead, which is
guaranteed to have a non-empty nodemask once we reach that code path.

Guopeng ZhangandGreg Kroah-Hartman f8a8358832 cgroup/cpuset: Reset DL migration state on can_attach() failure
[ Upstream commit 4a39eda5fd ]

cpuset_can_attach() accumulates temporary SCHED_DEADLINE migration
state in the destination cpuset while walking the taskset.

If a later task_can_attach() or security_task_setscheduler() check
fails, cgroup_migrate_execute() treats cpuset as the failing subsystem
and does not call cpuset_cancel_attach() for it. The partially
accumulated state is then left behind and can be consumed by a later
attach, corrupting cpuset DL task accounting and pending DL bandwidth
accounting.

Reset the pending DL migration state from the common error exit when
ret is non-zero. Successful can_attach() keeps the state for
cpuset_attach() or cpuset_cancel_attach().

cuitaoandGreg Kroah-Hartman 7257f93001 cgroup/rdma: fix integer overflow in rdmacg_try_charge()
[ Upstream commit c802f460dd ]

The expression `rpool->resources[index].usage + 1` is computed in int
arithmetic before being assigned to s64 variable `new`. When usage equals
INT_MAX (the default "max" value), the addition overflows to INT_MIN.
This negative value then passes the `new > max` check incorrectly,
allowing a charge that should be rejected and corrupting usage to
negative.

Fix by casting usage to s64 before the addition so the arithmetic is
done in 64-bit.

Qingye ZhaoandGreg Kroah-Hartman 4a9654a2b4 cgroup: fix race between task migration and iteration
commit 5ee01f1a73 upstream.

When a task is migrated out of a css_set, cgroup_migrate_add_task()
first moves it from cset->tasks to cset->mg_tasks via:

    list_move_tail(&task->cg_list, &cset->mg_tasks);

If a css_task_iter currently has it->task_pos pointing to this task,
css_set_move_task() calls css_task_iter_skip() to keep the iterator
valid. However, since the task has already been moved to ->mg_tasks,
the iterator is advanced relative to the mg_tasks list instead of the
original tasks list. As a result, remaining tasks on cset->tasks, as
well as tasks queued on cset->mg_tasks, can be skipped by iteration.

Fix this by calling css_set_skip_task_iters() before unlinking
task->cg_list from cset->tasks. This advances all active iterators to
the next task on cset->tasks, so iteration continues correctly even
when a task is concurrently being migrated.

This race is hard to hit in practice without instrumentation, but it
can be reproduced by artificially slowing down cgroup_procs_show().
For example, on an Android device a temporary
/sys/kernel/cgroup/cgroup_test knob can be added to inject a delay
into cgroup_procs_show(), and then:

  1) Spawn three long-running tasks (PIDs 101, 102, 103).
  2) Create a test cgroup and move the tasks into it.
  3) Enable a large delay via /sys/kernel/cgroup/cgroup_test.
  4) In one shell, read cgroup.procs from the test cgroup.
  5) Within the delay window, in another shell migrate PID 102 by
     writing it to a different cgroup.procs file.

Under this setup, cgroup.procs can intermittently show only PID 101
while skipping PID 103. Once the migration completes, reading the
file again shows all tasks as expected.

Note that this change does not allow removing the existing
css_set_skip_task_iters() call in css_set_move_task(). The new call
in cgroup_migrate_add_task() only handles iterators that are racing
with migration while the task is still on cset->tasks. Iterators may
also start after the task has been moved to cset->mg_tasks. If we
dropped css_set_skip_task_iters() from css_set_move_task(), such
iterators could keep task_pos pointing to a migrating task, causing
css_task_iter_advance() to malfunction on the destination css_set,
up to and including crashes or infinite loops.

The race window between migration and iteration is very small, and
css_task_iter is not on a hot path. In the worst case, when an
iterator is positioned on the first thread of the migrating process,
cgroup_migrate_add_task() may have to skip multiple tasks via
css_set_skip_task_iters(). However, this only happens when migration
and iteration actually race, so the performance impact is negligible
compared to the correctness fix provided here.

Chen RidongandGreg Kroah-Hartman 0de83b4918 cpuset: Treat cpusets in attaching as populated
[ Upstream commit b1bcaed1e3 ]

Currently, the check for whether a partition is populated does not
account for tasks in the cpuset of attaching. This is a corner case
that can leave a task stuck in a partition with no effective CPUs.

The race condition occurs as follows:

cpu0				cpu1
				//cpuset A  with cpu N
migrate task p to A
cpuset_can_attach
// with effective cpus
// check ok

// cpuset_mutex is not held	// clear cpuset.cpus.exclusive
				// making effective cpus empty
				update_exclusive_cpumask
				// tasks_nocpu_error check ok
				// empty effective cpus, partition valid
cpuset_attach
...
// task p stays in A, with non-effective cpus.

To fix this issue, this patch introduces cs_is_populated, which considers
tasks in the attaching cpuset. This new helper is used in validate_change
and partition_is_populated.

                                // waiting for css A to die

Problem scenario:
1. CPU0 mounts perf_event (rebind_subsystems)
2. CPU1 unmounts net_prio (cgroup_kill_sb), queuing root destruction work
3. A dying perf_event CSS gets queued for offline after root destruction
4. Root destruction waits for offline completion, but offline work is
   blocked behind root destruction in cgroup_destroy_wq (max_active=1)

Solution:
Split cgroup_destroy_wq into three dedicated workqueues:
cgroup_offline_wq – Handles CSS offline operations
cgroup_release_wq – Manages resource release
cgroup_free_wq – Performs final memory deallocation

This separation eliminates blocking in the CSS free path while waiting for
offline operations to complete.

Since commit d74b27d63a ("cgroup/cpuset: Change cpuset_rwsem
and hotplug lock order"), the ordering of cpu hotplug lock
and cpuset_mutex had been reversed. That patch correctly
used the cpuslocked version of the static branch API to enable
cpusets_pre_enable_key and cpusets_enabled_key, but it didn't do the
same for cpusets_insane_config_key.

The cpusets_insane_config_key can be enabled in the
check_insane_mems_config() which is called from update_nodemask()
or cpuset_hotplug_update_tasks() with both cpu hotplug lock and
cpuset_mutex held. Deadlock can happen with a pending hotplug event that
tries to acquire the cpu hotplug write lock which will block further
cpus_read_lock() attempt from check_insane_mems_config(). Fix that by
switching to use static_branch_enable_cpuslocked().

Chen RidongandGreg Kroah-Hartman 8594813132 Revert "cgroup_freezer: cgroup_freezing: Check if not frozen"
[ Upstream commit 14a67b42cb ]

This reverts commit cff5f49d43.

Commit cff5f49d43 ("cgroup_freezer: cgroup_freezing: Check if not
frozen") modified the cgroup_freezing() logic to verify that the FROZEN
flag is not set, affecting the return value of the freezing() function,
in order to address a warning in __thaw_task.

A race condition exists that may allow tasks to escape being frozen. The
following scenario demonstrates this issue:

CPU 0 (get_signal path)		CPU 1 (freezer.state reader)
try_to_freeze			read freezer.state
__refrigerator			freezer_read
				update_if_frozen
WRITE_ONCE(current->__state, TASK_FROZEN);
				...
				/* Task is now marked frozen */
				/* frozen(task) == true */
				/* Assuming other tasks are frozen */
				freezer->state |= CGROUP_FROZEN;
/* freezing(current) returns false */
/* because cgroup is frozen (not freezing) */
break out
__set_current_state(TASK_RUNNING);
/* Bug: Task resumes running when it should remain frozen */

The existing !frozen(p) check in __thaw_task makes the
WARN_ON_ONCE(freezing(p)) warning redundant. Removing this warning enables
reverting the commit cff5f49d43 ("cgroup_freezer: cgroup_freezing: Check
if not frozen") to resolve the issue.

The warning has been removed in the previous patch. This patch revert the
commit cff5f49d43 ("cgroup_freezer: cgroup_freezing: Check if not
frozen") to complete the fix.

When tasks are migrated to a frozen cgroup, the freezer fails to
immediately freeze the tasks, causing the cgroup to remain in the

The freeze_task() function is called before clearing the CGROUP_FROZEN

preventing __freeze_task() from being invoked for the migrated task.

Shakeel ButtandGreg Kroah-Hartman 28e51dd4f2 cgroup: fix race between fork and cgroup.kill
commit b69bb476de upstream.

Tejun reported the following race between fork() and cgroup.kill at [1].

Tejun:
  I was looking at cgroup.kill implementation and wondering whether there
  could be a race window. So, __cgroup_kill() does the following:

   k1. Set CGRP_KILL.
   k2. Iterate tasks and deliver SIGKILL.
   k3. Clear CGRP_KILL.

  The copy_process() does the following:

   c1. Copy a bunch of stuff.
   c2. Grab siglock.
   c3. Check fatal_signal_pending().
   c4. Commit to forking.
   c5. Release siglock.
   c6. Call cgroup_post_fork() which puts the task on the css_set and tests
       CGRP_KILL.

  The intention seems to be that either a forking task gets SIGKILL and
  terminates on c3 or it sees CGRP_KILL on c6 and kills the child. However, I
  don't see what guarantees that k3 can't happen before c6. ie. After a
  forking task passes c5, k2 can take place and then before the forking task
  reaches c6, k3 can happen. Then, nobody would send SIGKILL to the child.
  What am I missing?

This is indeed a race. One way to fix this race is by taking
cgroup_threadgroup_rwsem in write mode in __cgroup_kill() as the fork()
side takes cgroup_threadgroup_rwsem in read mode from cgroup_can_fork()
to cgroup_post_fork(). However that would be heavy handed as this adds
one more potential stall scenario for cgroup.kill which is usually
called under extreme situation like memory pressure.

To fix this race, let's maintain a sequence number per cgroup which gets
incremented on __cgroup_kill() call. On the fork() side, the
cgroup_can_fork() will cache the sequence number locally and recheck it
against the cgroup's sequence number at cgroup_post_fork() site. If the
sequence numbers mismatch, it means __cgroup_kill() can been called and
we should send SIGKILL to the newly created task.

Xiu JianfengandGreg Kroah-Hartman c22c748834 cgroup: Fix potential overflow issue when checking max_depth
[ Upstream commit 3cc4e13bb1 ]

cgroup.max.depth is the maximum allowed descent depth below the current
cgroup. If the actual descent depth is equal or larger, an attempt to
create a new child cgroup will fail. However due to the cgroup->max_depth
is of int type and having the default value INT_MAX, the condition
'level > cgroup->max_depth' will never be satisfied, and it will cause
an overflow of the level after it reaches to INT_MAX.

Fix it by starting the level from 0 and using '>=' instead.

It's worth mentioning that this issue is unlikely to occur in reality,
as it's impossible to have a depth of INT_MAX hierarchy, but should be
be avoided logically.

Waiman LongandGreg Kroah-Hartman 3cff144cb3 cgroup: Protect css->cgroup write under css_set_lock
[ Upstream commit 57b56d1680 ]

The writing of css->cgroup associated with the cgroup root in
rebind_subsystems() is currently protected only by cgroup_mutex.
However, the reading of css->cgroup in both proc_cpuset_show() and
proc_cgroup_show() is protected just by css_set_lock. That makes the
readers susceptible to racing problems like data tearing or caching.
It is also a problem that can be reported by KCSAN.

This can be fixed by using READ_ONCE() and WRITE_ONCE() to access
css->cgroup. Alternatively, the writing of css->cgroup can be moved
under css_set_lock as well which is done by this patch.

Yafang ShaoandGreg Kroah-Hartman f5b7a97920 cgroup: Make operations on the cgroup root_list RCU safe
commit d23b5c5777 upstream.

At present, when we perform operations on the cgroup root_list, we must
hold the cgroup_mutex, which is a relatively heavyweight lock. In reality,
we can make operations on this list RCU-safe, eliminating the need to hold
the cgroup_mutex during traversal. Modifications to the list only occur in
the cgroup root setup and destroy paths, which should be infrequent in a
production environment. In contrast, traversal may occur frequently.
Therefore, making it RCU-safe would be beneficial.

Chen RidongandGreg Kroah-Hartman 29a8d4e02f cgroup/cpuset: Prevent UAF in proc_cpuset_show()
[ Upstream commit 1be59c97c8 ]

An UAF can happen when /proc/cpuset is read as reported in [1].

This can be reproduced by the following methods:
1.add an mdelay(1000) before acquiring the cgroup_lock In the
 cgroup_path_ns function.
2.$cat /proc/<pid>/cpuset   repeatly.
3.$mount -t cgroup -o cpuset cpuset /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/
$umount /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/   repeatly.

The race that cause this bug can be shown as below:

(umount)		|	(cat /proc/<pid>/cpuset)
css_release		|	proc_cpuset_show
css_release_work_fn	|	css = task_get_css(tsk, cpuset_cgrp_id);
css_free_rwork_fn	|	cgroup_path_ns(css->cgroup, ...);
cgroup_destroy_root	|	mutex_lock(&cgroup_mutex);
rebind_subsystems	|
cgroup_free_root 	|
			|	// cgrp was freed, UAF
			|	cgroup_path_ns_locked(cgrp,..);

When the cpuset is initialized, the root node top_cpuset.css.cgrp
will point to &cgrp_dfl_root.cgrp. In cgroup v1, the mount operation will
allocate cgroup_root, and top_cpuset.css.cgrp will point to the allocated
&cgroup_root.cgrp. When the umount operation is executed,
top_cpuset.css.cgrp will be rebound to &cgrp_dfl_root.cgrp.

The problem is that when rebinding to cgrp_dfl_root, there are cases
where the cgroup_root allocated by setting up the root for cgroup v1
is cached. This could lead to a Use-After-Free (UAF) if it is
subsequently freed. The descendant cgroups of cgroup v1 can only be
freed after the css is released. However, the css of the root will never
be released, yet the cgroup_root should be freed when it is unmounted.
This means that obtaining a reference to the css of the root does
not guarantee that css.cgrp->root will not be freed.

Fix this problem by using rcu_read_lock in proc_cpuset_show().
As cgroup_root is kfree_rcu after commit d23b5c5777
("cgroup: Make operations on the cgroup root_list RCU safe"),
css->cgroup won't be freed during the critical section.
To call cgroup_path_ns_locked, css_set_lock is needed, so it is safe to
replace task_get_css with task_css.

[ Upstream commit ff6d413b0b ]

One of the last remaining users of strlcpy() in the kernel is
kernfs_path_from_node_locked(), which passes back the problematic "length
we _would_ have copied" return value to indicate truncation. Convert the
chain of all callers to use the negative return value (some of which
already doing this explicitly). All callers were already also checking
for negative return values, so the risk to missed checks looks very low.

In this analysis, it was found that cgroup1_release_agent() actually

Tim Van PattenandGreg Kroah-Hartman 4c00f01832 cgroup_freezer: cgroup_freezing: Check if not frozen
commit cff5f49d43 upstream.

__thaw_task() was recently updated to warn if the task being thawed was
part of a freezer cgroup that is still currently freezing:

	void __thaw_task(struct task_struct *p)
	{
	...
		if (WARN_ON_ONCE(freezing(p)))
			goto unlock;

This has exposed a bug in cgroup1 freezing where when CGROUP_FROZEN is
asserted, the CGROUP_FREEZING bits are not also cleared at the same
time. Meaning, when a cgroup is marked FROZEN it continues to be marked
FREEZING as well. This causes the WARNING to trigger, because
cgroup_freezing() thinks the cgroup is still freezing.

There are two ways to fix this:

1. Whenever FROZEN is set, clear FREEZING for the cgroup and all
children cgroups.
2. Update cgroup_freezing() to also verify that FROZEN is not set.

This patch implements option (2), since it's smaller and more
straightforward.

Michal KoutnýandGreg Kroah-Hartman cb8f1dd1b7 cgroup: Remove duplicates in cgroup v1 tasks file
commit 1ca0b60515 upstream.

One PID may appear multiple times in a preloaded pidlist.
(Possibly due to PID recycling but we have reports of the same
task_struct appearing with different PIDs, thus possibly involving
transfer of PID via de_thread().)

Because v1 seq_file iterator uses PIDs as position, it leads to
a message:
> seq_file: buggy .next function kernfs_seq_next did not update position index

Conservative and quick fix consists of removing duplicates from `tasks`
file (as opposed to removing pidlists altogether). It doesn't affect
correctness (it's sufficient to show a PID once), performance impact
would be hidden by unconditional sorting of the pidlist already in place
(asymptotically).

also destroy its waitqueue head and if there is still a polling process
on that file accessing the waitqueue, it will step on the freed pointer:

do_select
  vfs_poll
                           do_rmdir
                             cgroup_rmdir

                                   cgroup_pressure_release
                                     psi_trigger_destroy
                                       wake_up_pollfree(&t->event_wait)
// vfs_poll is unblocked
                                       synchronize_rcu
                                       kfree(t)
  poll_freewait -> UAF access to the trigger's waitqueue head

Patch [1] fixed this issue for epoll() case using wake_up_pollfree(),
however the same issue exists for synchronous poll() case.
The root cause of this issue is that the lifecycles of the psi trigger's
waitqueue and of the file associated with the trigger are different. Fix
this by using kernfs_generic_poll function when polling on cgroup-specific
psi triggers. It internally uses kernfs_open_node->poll waitqueue head
with its lifecycle tied to the file's lifecycle. This also renders the
fix in [1] obsolete, so revert it.

Domenico CerasuoloandGreg Kroah-Hartman d5dca19776 sched/psi: Allow unprivileged polling of N*2s period
[ Upstream commit d82caa2735 ]

PSI offers 2 mechanisms to get information about a specific resource
pressure. One is reading from /proc/pressure/<resource>, which gives
average pressures aggregated every 2s. The other is creating a pollable
fd for a specific resource and cgroup.

The trigger creation requires CAP_SYS_RESOURCE, and gives the
possibility to pick specific time window and threshold, spawing an RT
thread to aggregate the data.

Systemd would like to provide containers the option to monitor pressure
on their own cgroup and sub-cgroups. For example, if systemd launches a
container that itself then launches services, the container should have
the ability to poll() for pressure in individual services. But neither
the container nor the services are privileged.

This patch implements a mechanism to allow unprivileged users to create
pressure triggers. The difference with privileged triggers creation is
that unprivileged ones must have a time window that's a multiple of 2s.
This is so that we can avoid unrestricted spawning of rt threads, and
use instead the same aggregation mechanism done for the averages, which
runs independently of any triggers.

Inside css_task_iter_start/next/end, css_set_lock is hold and then
released, so when iterating task(left side), the css_set may be moved to
another list(right side), then it->cset_head points to the old list head
and it->cset_pos->next points to the head node of new list, which can't
be used as struct css_set.

To fix this issue, switch from all css_sets to only scgrp's css_sets to
patch in-flight iterators to preserve correct iteration, and then
update it->cset_head as well.

[ Upstream commit 42a11bf5c5 ]

By default, the clone(2) syscall spawn a child process into the same
cgroup as its parent. With the use of the CLONE_INTO_CGROUP flag
introduced by commit ef2c41cf38 ("clone3: allow spawning processes
into cgroups"), the child will be spawned into a different cgroup which
is somewhat similar to writing the child's tid into "cgroup.threads".

The current cpuset_fork() method does not properly handle the
CLONE_INTO_CGROUP case where the cpuset of the child may be different
from that of its parent. Update the cpuset_fork() method to treat the
CLONE_INTO_CGROUP case similar to cpuset_attach().

Since the newly cloned task has not been running yet, its actual
memory usage isn't known. So it is not necessary to make change to mm
in cpuset_fork().

Will DeaconandGreg Kroah-Hartman c47c2b173d cpuset: Call set_cpus_allowed_ptr() with appropriate mask for task
[ Upstream commit 7a2127e66a ]

set_cpus_allowed_ptr() will fail with -EINVAL if the requested
affinity mask is not a subset of the task_cpu_possible_mask() for the
task being updated. Consequently, on a heterogeneous system with cpusets
spanning the different CPU types, updates to the cgroup hierarchy can
silently fail to update task affinities when the effective affinity
mask for the cpuset is expanded.

For example, consider an arm64 system with 4 CPUs, where CPUs 2-3 are
the only cores capable of executing 32-bit tasks. Attaching a 32-bit
task to a cpuset containing CPUs 0-2 will correctly affine the task to
CPU 2. Extending the cpuset to CPUs 0-3, however, will fail to extend
the affinity mask of the 32-bit task because update_tasks_cpumask() will
pass the full 0-3 mask to set_cpus_allowed_ptr().

Extend update_tasks_cpumask() to take a temporary 'cpumask' paramater
and use it to mask the 'effective_cpus' mask with the possible mask for
each task being updated.

Waiman LongandGreg Kroah-Hartman a2ab7f2cf5 cgroup/cpuset: Fix wrong check in update_parent_subparts_cpumask()
commit e5ae880384 upstream.

It was found that the check to see if a partition could use up all
the cpus from the parent cpuset in update_parent_subparts_cpumask()
was incorrect. As a result, it is possible to leave parent with no
effective cpu left even if there are tasks in the parent cpuset. This
can lead to system panic as reported in [1].

Fix this probem by updating the check to fail the enabling the partition
if parent's effective_cpus is a subset of the child's cpus_allowed.

Also record the error code when an error happens in update_prstate()
and add a test case where parent partition and child have the same cpu
list and parent has task. Enabling partition in the child will fail in
this case.

Tejun HeoandLinus Torvalds fbf8321238 memcg: Fix possible use-after-free in memcg_write_event_control()
memcg_write_event_control() accesses the dentry->d_name of the specified
control fd to route the write call. As a cgroup interface file can't be
renamed, it's safe to access d_name as long as the specified file is a
regular cgroup file. Also, as these cgroup interface files can't be
removed before the directory, it's safe to access the parent too.

Prior to 347c4a8747 ("memcg: remove cgroup_event->cft"), there was a
call to __file_cft() which verified that the specified file is a regular
cgroupfs file before further accesses. The cftype pointer returned from
__file_cft() was no longer necessary and the commit inadvertently
dropped the file type check with it allowing any file to slip through.
With the invarients broken, the d_name and parent accesses can now race
against renames and removals of arbitrary files and cause
use-after-free's.

Fix the bug by resurrecting the file type check in __file_cft(). Now
that cgroupfs is implemented through kernfs, checking the file
operations needs to go through a layer of indirection. Instead, let's
check the superblock and dentry type.

Pull cgroup fixes from Tejun Heo:

 - Fix a recent regression where a sleeping kernfs function is called
   with css_set_lock (spinlock) held

 - Revert the commit to enable cgroup1 support for cgroup_get_from_fd/file()

   Multiple users assume that the lookup only works for cgroup2 and
   breaks when fed a cgroup1 file. Instead, introduce a separate set of
   functions to lookup both v1 and v2 and use them where the user
   explicitly wants to support both versions.

 - Compat update for tools/perf/util/bpf_skel/bperf_cgroup.bpf.c.

 - Add Josef Bacik as a blkcg maintainer.
