Although I don't plan to bring over new assertions wholesale
into the current qualification branch, it's entirely possible
that various minor changes in main will use the new assertions;
having this basic support in the release branch will simplify that.
(This is why I'm adding the includes as a separate pass from
rewriting the individual assertions)
Previously inside SILDebugInfoGenerator (i.e. `-sil-based-debuginfo`
flag) we're removing all `debug_value` and `debug_value_addr` to avoid
mixing Swift and SIL source location. But we forgot to handle the source
location inside the auxiliary debug variable info in a `alloc_stack`
instruction. Which triggered a verification error regarding debug scope
mismatch.
This patch teaches SILDebugInfoGenerator to remove any auxiliary debug
variable scope, if there is any. Which might degrade the debug info
quality but we're mostly care about line number in this mode.

- If any of the `-g<kind>` flag is given -- except `-gnone`, debug
info will be printed into every generated SIL files.
- The `-gsil` is deprecated in favor of `-sil-based-debuginfo`. The
SILDebugInfoGenerator Pass now generates intermediate SIL file with
name "<output file>.sil_dbg_<n>.sil". Other functionalities of that
Pass remain the same.
My goal was to reduce the size of SILLocation. It now contains only of a storage union, which is basically a pointer and a bitfield containing the Kind, StorageKind and flags. By far, most locations are only single pointers to an AST node. For the few cases where more data needs to be stored, this data is allocated separately: with the SILModule's bump pointer allocator.
While working on this, I couldn't resist to do a major refactoring to simplify the code:
* removed unused stuff
* The term "DebugLoc" was used for 3 completely different things:
- for `struct SILLocation::DebugLoc` -> renamed it to `FilePosition`
- for `hasDebugLoc()`/`getDebugSourceLoc()` -> renamed it to `hasASTNodeForDebugging()`/`getSourceLocForDebugging()`
- for `class SILDebugLocation` -> kept it as it is (though, `SILScopedLocation` would be a better name, IMO)
* made SILLocation more "functional", i.e. replaced some setters with corresponding constructors
* replaced the hand-written bitfield `KindData` with C bitfields
* updated and improved comments
* Fix multi-threaded IRGen: store the DeclContext in a SILFunction explicitly instead of deriving it from the debug location. It's used in IRGen to decide into which module a function is emitted. With -gsil the debug location is changed and that should not change the module decision.
* Erase debug_value/debug_value_addr instructions when using -gsil. Those instructions are not needed anymore. They can also trigger a verifier error.
At some point, pass definitions were heavily macro-ized. Pass
descriptive names were added in two places. This is not only redundant
but a source of confusion. You could waste a lot of time grepping for
the wrong string. I removed all the getName() overrides which, at
around 90 passes, was a fairly significant amount of code bloat.
Any pass that we want to be able to invoke by name from a tool
(sil-opt) or pipeline plan *should* have unique type name, enum value,
commend-line string, and name string. I removed a comment about the
various inliner passes that contradicted that.
Side note: We should be consistent with the policy that a pass is
identified by its type. We have a couple passes, LICM and CSE, which
currently violate that convention.
Changes:
* Terminate all namespaces with the correct closing comment.
* Make sure argument names in comments match the corresponding parameter name.
* Remove redundant get() calls on smart pointers.
* Prefer using "override" or "final" instead of "virtual". Remove "virtual" where appropriate.
This change follows up on an idea from Michael (thanks!).
It enables debugging and profiling on SIL level, which is useful for compiler debugging.
There is a new frontend option -gsil which lets the compiler write a SIL file and generated debug info for it.
For details see docs/DebuggingTheCompiler.rst and the comments in SILDebugInfoGenerator.cpp.
