2cfcdd8ed1 Add a new driver tool/mode to print the synthesized Swift interface for a module.
This mode is similar to `swift-symbolgraph-extract`; it takes a subset of compiler
flags to configure the invocation for module loading, as well as a module name
whose contents should be extracted. It does not take any other input files. The
output is a single text file specified by `-o` (or `stdout` if not specified).

While the most common use case for this would be viewing the synthesized Swift
interface for a Clang module, since the implementation simply calls
`swift::ide::printModuleInterface` under the hood, it's usable for any module
that Swift can import. Thus, it could also be used to view a synthesized textual
representation of, say, a compiled `.swiftmodule`.

One could imagine that in the future, we might add more flags to
`swift-synthesize-interface` to modify various `PrintOptions` used when
generating the output, if we think those would be useful.

6443619126 Remove swift-indent tool
This removes the implementation of the `swift-indent` tool, its
associated documentation, and utilities. This tool was never completed
and has much better alternatives with `swift-format` which is more
flexible and actually maintained.

470baff865 Driver: Remove swift-api-extract.
Now that API descriptions are emitted during module build jobs when
`-emit-api-descriptor-path` is specified and the build system has been updated
to pass that flag when the output is needed, the `swift-api-extract` frontend
alias is no longer used. Delete it and the tests that were specific to invoking
`swift-api-extract`.

2f7aa428db [Macros] In-process plugin server
Separate swift-syntax libs for the compiler and for the library plugins.
Compiler communicates with library plugins using serialized messages
just like executable plugins.

* `lib/swift/host/compiler/lib_Compiler*.dylib`(`lib/CompilerSwiftSyntax`):
swift-syntax libraries for compiler. Library evolution is disabled.
* Compiler (`ASTGen` and `swiftIDEUtilsBridging`) only depends on
  `lib/swift/host/compiler` libraries.
* `SwiftInProcPluginServer`: In-process plugin server shared library.
This has one `swift_inproc_plugins_handle_message` entry point that
receives a message and return the response.
* In the compiler
  * Add `-in-process-plugin-server-path` front-end option, which specifies
    the `SwiftInProcPluginServer` shared library path.
  * Remove `LoadedLibraryPlugin`, because all library plugins are managed
    by `SwiftInProcPluginServer`
  * Introduce abstract `CompilerPlugin` class that has 2 subclasses:
    * `LoadedExecutablePlugin` existing class that represents an
      executable plugin
    * `InProcessPlugins` wraps `dlopen`ed `SwiftInProcPluginServer`
  * Unified the code path in `TypeCheckMacros.cpp` and `ASTGen`, the
difference between executable plugins and library plugins are now
    abstracted by `CompilerPlugin`

041691184c [CMake] Replace early swift-syntax with FetchContent
Use FetchContent to include swift-syntax directly in swift. This can be
thought of as an `add_subdirectory` for a directory outside the root.

The default build directory will be `_deps/swiftsyntax-subbuild/`, though
the modules and shared libraries will be built in `lib/swift/host` by
passing down `SWIFT_HOST_LIBRARIES_DEST_DIR` to avoid copying them as we
were doing previously.

7b460ce495 build: fix accidental cmake expansions
As of CMake 3.25, there are now global variables `LINUX=1`, `ANDROID=1`,
etc. These conflict with expressions that used these names as unquoted
strings in positions where CMake accepts 'variable|string', for example:

- `if(sdk STREQUAL LINUX)` would fail, because `LINUX` is now defined and
expands to 1, where it would previously coerce to a string.

- `if(${sdk} STREQUAL "LINUX")` would fail if `sdk=LINUX`, because the
  left-hand side expands twice.

In this patch, I looked for a number of patterns to fix up, sometimes a
little defensively:

- Quoted right-hand side of `STREQUAL` where I was confident it was
intended to be a string literal.

- Removed manual variable expansion on left-hand side of `STREQUAL`,
`MATCHES` and `IN_LIST` where I was confident it was unintended.

Fixes #65028.

5786cbd602 [Macros] Make the compiler frontend depend on the macro plugin libraries
The dependency of the Observation library on the observation macro
plugin introduces a direct dependency of a target library on a host
library, (lib -> stdlib) that we'd like to avoid. Instead, make the
Swift frontend binary depend on the macro plugin libraries that we
build, so that it's the complete host-side stack.

f417630054 Add option to reduce build times when using ThinLTO and ld64 (#41058)
Internal configurations targeting Darwin employ ThinLTO to
improve compiler performance, however using it on all executable
causes build time to increase with no matching benefit.

To reduce build times in such configurations, we allow some
ancillary targets to opt out of LLVM IR optimizations when linking
ThinLTO with ld64 (e.g. tools used for bootstrapping or debugging the
Swift compiler) -- this behaviour is opt in through a new flag
`--swift-tools-ld64-lto-codegen-only-for-supporting-targets`.

61db072617 cmake: fix libswift build dependencies
Unfortunately using the convenient "bootstrapping0-all", etc. custom targets does not work.
For some reason it does not cause a dependent file (like libswift's SIL.o) being rebuilt when a depenency (like swift-frontend from the previous bootstrapping stage) changes.
Instead we have to list al library- and executable-targets explicitly.

f8427829dc [SR-15135] Copy over early swift-driver executable to the build dir instead of creating a symlink
The SwiftDriver searches `swift-frontend` based on `Bundle.main.executablePath` (which internally uses `CFGetProcessPath`). This search dir is resolved differently on macOS and Linux so swift-frontend can't be found on Linux, forcing the driver to fallback to using the host system toolchain instead of the just-built one.

* add the (still empty) libswift package
* add build support for libswift in CMake

The build can be controlled with the LIBSWIFT_BUILD_MODE cmake variable: by default it’s “DISABLE”, which means that libswift is not built. If it’s “HOSTTOOLS”, libswift is built with a pre-installed toolchain on the host system.

1e44ed00eb Revert "Always build SwiftDriver and use it as default compiler driver" 2021-04-28 11:20:21 -07:00
Artem Chikin
c2dc8e3d07 Always build (and use) the new SwiftDriver as the default compiler driver.
This will make sure that compiler developers are using the new driver when they build the compiler locally and use it.

- Adds a new build-script product category: before_build_script_impl for products we wish to build before the impl products.
- Adds a new EarlySwiftDriver product to that category, which gets built with the host toolchain.
- Adds an escape hatch: --skip-early-swift-driver
- Adjusts the swift CMake configuration with an additional step: swift_create_early_driver_symlinks which (if one was built) creates symlinks in the swift build bin directory to the EarlySwiftDriver swift-driver and swift-help executables.
- Adds a new test subset : only_early_swiftdriver, which will get built into a corresponding CMake test target: check-swift-only_early_swiftdriver-* which runs a small subset of driver-related tests against the Early SwiftDriver.
  - This subset is run always when the compiler itself is tested (--test is specified)
  - With an escape disable-switch: --skip-test-early-swift-driver
  - All tests outside of only_early_swiftdriver are forced to run using the legacy C++ driver (to ensure it gets tested, still).

NOTE: SwiftDriver product (no 'Early') is still the main product used to build the driver for toolchain installation into and for executing the product's own tests. This change does not affect that.
