* Restore the pre-10.15 version of public init?(_: NSRange, in: __shared String)
We need this to allow master to work on 10.14 systems (in particular, to allow PR testing to work correctly without disabling back-deployment tests).
Since scalar-alignment is set in inlinable code, switch the alignment
bit to one of the previously-reserved bits rather than a grapheme
cache bit. Setting a grapheme cache bit in inlinable would break
backward deployment, as older versions would interpret it as a cached
value.
Also adjust the name to "scalar-aligned", which is clearer, and
removed assertion (which should be a real precondition).
Fixes a general category (pun intended) of scalar-alignment bugs
surrounding exchanging non-scalar-aligned indices between views and
for slicing.
SE-0180 unifies the Index type of String and all its views and allows
non-scalar-aligned indices to be used across views. In order to
guarantee behavior, we often have to check and perform scalar
alignment. To speed up these checks, we allocate a bit denoting
known-to-be-aligned, so that the alignment check can skip the
load. The below shows what views need to check for alignment before
they can operate, and whether the indices they produce are aligned.
┌───────────────╥────────────────────┬──────────────────────────┐

The "requires alignment" applies to any operation taking a
String.Index that's not defined entirely in terms of other operations
taking a String.Index. These include:
* index(after:)
* index(before:)
* subscript
* distance(from:to:) (since `to` is compared against directly)
* UTF16View._nativeGetOffset(for:)
This adds new (availability-controlled) API to Unicode.Scalar,
exposing the scalar's UTF-8 code units as a random-access collection
similarly to how it currently exposes UTF-16 code units.
Tests added.
We need to explicity ensure that an integer is in the required byte
order (little-endian in this case) before accessing it as an array
of bytes through an unsafe pointer.
As a general rule, it is safe to mark the implementation of hash(into:) and _rawHashValue(seed:) for @_fixed_layout structs as inlinable.
However, some structs (like String guts, Character, KeyPath-related types) have complicated enough hashing that it seems counterproductive to inline them. Mark these with @effects(releasenone) instead.
This includes various revisions to the APIs landing in Swift 4.2, including:
- Random and other randomness APIs
- Hashable changes
- MemoryLayout.offset(of:)
Streamline internal String creation. Previously, everything funneled
into a single generic function, however, every single call of the
generic funnel had relevant specific information that could be used
for a more efficient algorithm.
In preparation for efficiently forming small strings, refactor this
logic into a handful of more specialized subroutines to preserve more
specific information from the callers.
* Make Range conditionally a Collection
* Convert ClosedRange to conditionally a collection
* De-gyb Range/ClosedRange, refactoring some methods.
* Remove use of Countable{Closed}Range from stdlib
* Remove Countable use from Foundation
* Fix test errors and warnings resulting from Range/CountableRange collapse
* fix prespecialize test for new mangling
* Update CoreAudio use of CountableRange
* Update SwiftSyntax use of CountableRange
* Restore ClosedRange.Index: Hashable conformance
* Move fixed typechecker slowness test for array-of-ranges from slow to fast, yay
* Apply Doug's patch to loosen test to just check for error
Include the initial implementation of _StringGuts, a 2-word
replacement for _LegacyStringCore. 64-bit Darwin supported, 32-bit and
Linux support in subsequent commits.
- Update NSRange -> Range guidance
- Fix example in Optional
- Improve RangeExpression docs
- Fix issue in UnsafeRawBufferPointer.initializeMemory
- Code point -> scalar value most places
- Reposition the dot above the scripty `i'
- Fix ExpressibleByArrayLiteral code sample
Piggybacks some resilience diagnostics onto the availability
checking code.
Public and versioned functions with inlineable bodies can only
reference other public and internal entities, since the SIL code
for the function body is serialized and stored as part of the
module.
This includes @_transparent functions, @_inlineable functions,
accessors for @_inlineable storage, @inline(__always) functions,
and in Swift 4 mode, default argument expressions.
The new checks are a source-breaking change, however we don't
guarantee source compatibility for underscored attributes.
The new ABI and tests for the default argument model will come in
subsequent commits.
We were using a precondition which crashes the program when invalid input is
provided. We want to provide a way to gracefully check and handle invalid input
or shutdown the program if necessary.
SR-1930
In various cases where we had global operators for non-generic
concrete types (such as String + String), move those operators into
the type. This should not affect the sources, but makes the exposition
of the library cleaner.
Plus, it's a good test for the compiler, which uncovered a few issues
where the compiler was coupled with the library.
change includes both the necessary protocol updates and the deprecation
warnings
suitable for migration. A future patch will remove the renamings and
make this
a hard error.
Added tests for expected-error and fix-its.
- Add arguments signature regardless that is the same as before.
Because the error message looks more natural.
e.g. "makeIterator" => "makeIterator()",
"replaceSubrange" => "replaceSubrange(_:with:)"
- Any${ExistentialCollection}.underestimateCount() was a method, not
computed property.
- 'LazySequenceType' has been renamed to 'LazySequenceProtocol', but not
'LazyCollectionProtocol'
- Streamable.writeTo(_:) had no argument label.
- Fixed typo in print() debugPrint() error message (not working for now)
- Repeated.init(): changed `renamed` to `message` because the arugment
order has changed.
- Marked `public` for some unavailable method on `Sequence`
- Sequence.split(_:maxSplit:allowEmptySlices) was replaced with
split(separator:maxSplits:omittingEmptySubsequences:),
not split(separator:omittingEmptySubsequences:isSeparator:)
- Sequence.split(_:allowEmptySlices:isSeparator) was replaced with
split(maxSplits:omittingEmptySubsequences:isSeparator:),
not split(_:omittingEmptySubsequences:isSeparator:)
- Sequence.startsWith(_:isEquivalent:) or startsWith(_:) had no label on
the first argument.
- transcode(_:_:_:_:stopOnError), not transcode(_:_:_:_:stoppingOnError)
- Removed mutating methods from UnsafePointer.
alloc(_:), dealloc(_:), setter:memory, initialize(_:), destroy(),
and destroy(_:)
This documentation revision covers a large number of types & protocols:
String, its views and their indices, the Unicode codec types and protocol,
as well as Character, UnicodeScalar, and StaticString, among others.
This also includes a few small changes across the standard library for
consistency.
