a1af0e45cb [Constraint solver] Reject trailing closures matching non-closure-parameters.
Enhance call-argument matching to reject trailing closures that match up
with parameters that cannot accept closures at all.

Fixes rdar://problem/50362170.

27b4070f5f When ranking overloads, always match up final closure parameters.
(in Swift 4 mode)

There are a lot of other things that overload ranking does *not* take
into account, and I intend to file a more general bug about that, but
this should resolve some of the most egregious ambiguities with Swift
3's import rules (SE-0005, particularly "omit needless words" and
adding default arguments).

Finishes rdar://problem/25607552.

3e7e923e6d [Parse] Reject trailing closures on literals (#7202)
`1 { }` was parsed as a call expression with a trailing closure. This made the diagnostics for `var x = 1 { get { ... } }` extremely bad. Resolves SR-3671.

6cbb494ad2 AST: Give all ValueDecls an interface type
Previously, getInterfaceType() would return getType() if no
interface type was set. Instead, always set an interface type
explicitly.

Eventually we want to remove getType() altogether, and this
brings us one step closer to this goal.

Note that ParamDecls are excempt from this treatment, because
they don't have a proper interface type yet. Cleaning this up
requires more effort.

ee56292808 AST: Give all ValueDecls an interface type

e6d6e0e92f Offer fix-its to disambiguate based on a trailing closure's label.
(by making it a normal argument with a label and not a trailing
closure)

Diagnostic part of rdar://problem/25607552. A later commit will keep
us from getting in this situation quite so much when default arguments
are involved.

4bf1c34f80 [Parse/Sema][SR-1672] Improve diagnostics for trailing closures in stmt-condition (#3184)
Fix-it suggests normal argument expression, instead of of enclosing whole
expression with parens.

* Moved diagnostic logic to Sema, because we have to add correct argument
  label for the closure.

7daaa22d93 Completely reimplement/redesign the AST representation of parameters.
Parameters (to methods, initializers, accessors, subscripts, etc) have always been represented
as Pattern's (of a particular sort), stemming from an early design direction that was abandoned.
Being built on top of patterns leads to patterns being overly complicated (e.g. tuple patterns
have to have varargs and default parameters) and make working on parameter lists complicated
and error prone.  This might have been ok in 2015, but there is no way we can live like this in
2016.

Instead of using Patterns, carve out a new ParameterList and Parameter type to represent all the
parameter specific stuff.  This simplifies many things and allows a lot of simplifications.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do this very incrementally, so this is a huge patch.  The good
news is that it erases a ton of code, and the technical debt that went with it.  Ignoring test
suite changes, we have:
   77 files changed, 2359 insertions(+), 3221 deletions(-)

This patch also makes a bunch of wierd things dead, but I'll sweep those out in follow-on
patches.

Fixes <rdar://problem/22846558> No code completions in Foo( when Foo has error type
Fixes <rdar://problem/24026538> Slight regression in generated header, which I filed to go with 3a23d75.

Fixes an overloading bug involving default arguments and curried functions (see the diff to
Constraints/diagnostics.swift, which we now correctly accept).

Fixes cases where problems with parameters would get emitted multiple times, e.g. in the
test/Parse/subscripting.swift testcase.

The source range for ParamDecl now includes its type, which permutes some of the IDE / SourceModel tests
(for the better, I think).

Eliminates the bogus "type annotation missing in pattern" error message when a type isn't
specified for a parameter (see test/decl/func/functions.swift).

This now consistently parenthesizes argument lists in function types, which leads to many diffs in the
SILGen tests among others.

This does break the "sibling indentation" test in SourceKit/CodeFormat/indent-sibling.swift, and
I haven't been able to figure it out.  Given that this is experimental functionality anyway,
I'm just XFAILing the test for now.  i'll look at it separately from this mongo diff.

aad3cf9e10 Factor out structural error diagnostics out to a helper method (allowing
the code to be actually readable since it unnests it greatly), and call it
both before and after argument type validation.  This allows us to capture
many more structural errors than before, leading to much better diagnostics
in a lot of cases.  This also fixes the specific regressions introduced by
96a1e96.

96a1e96dea Improve printing of "too few" or "too many" arguments in generic or
overloaded argument list mismatches.  We printed them in simple cases
due to "Failure" detecting them in trivial situations.  Instead of
doing that, let CSDiags do it, which allows us to pick things out of
overload sets and handle the more complex cases well.

This is a progression across the board except for a couple of cases
where we now produce "cannot convert value of type 'whatever' to
expected argument type '(arglist)'", this is a known issue that I'll
fix in a subsequent commit.

4b8ccacf63 Fix <rdar://problem/22243469> QoI: Poor error message with throws, default arguments, & overloads
and probably others.

When we're type-checking a failed ApplyExpr that has an overload set that
prevents getting a specific type to feed into the initial typechecking of
the argument list, ranking can often narrow down the list of candidates
further, to the point where there is only one candidate left or where all
candidates agree that one argument is wrong.

In this case, re-type-check the subexpr with the expected type.  In the case of
rdar://problem/22243469 we now produce:

t.swift:6:11: error: invalid conversion from throwing function of type '() throws -> ()' to non-throwing function type '() -> Void'
  process {
          ^

instead of:

t.swift:6:3: error: cannot invoke 'process' with an argument list of type '(() throws -> ())'
  process {
  ^
t.swift:6:3: note: overloads for 'process' exist with these partially matching parameter lists: (UInt, fn: () -> Void)

Which is a heck of a lot less specific.  Similarly, in the testcase from rdar://23550816, instead
of producing:

  takeTwoFuncsWithDefaults { $0 + 1 }
error: cannot invoke 'takeTwoFuncsWithDefaults' with an argument list of type '((Int -> Int)?)'
note: expected an argument list of type '(f1: (Int -> Int)?, f2: (String -> String)?)'

we now produce:
error: cannot convert value of type '_ -> Int' to expected argument type '(String -> String)?'

which is a lot closer to what we want to complain about.

97e6a50148 Start using contextual information from function calls to diagnose issues in their
argument.  For now we start with some of the most simple cases: single argument 
calls.  This dramatically improves the QoI for error messages in argument lists,
typically turning a error+note combo into a single specific error message.

Some minor improvements coming (and also generalizing this to n-ary calls), but it 
is nice that all the infrastructure is starting to come together...

04cca603c8 Start peering through the fog of ClosureExprs, using ambiguously typed subexprs to
diagnose problems inside of them instead of punting on them completely.

This leads to substantially better error messages in many cases, fixing:
 <rdar://problem/19870975> Incorrect diagnostic for failed member lookups within closures passed as arguments ("(_) -> _")
 <rdar://problem/21883806> Bogus "'_' can only appear in a pattern or on the left side of an assignment" is back
 <rdar://problem/20712541> QoI: Int/UInt mismatch produces useless error inside a block

and possibly others.  We are not yet capitalizing on available type information we do
have about closure exprs, so there are some cases where we produce
  "error: type of expression is ambiguous without more context"
when this isn't strictly true, but this is still a huge step forward.

bc3b47b98a Infer the return type of a closure to be () if it contains no
return statements, or a return statement with no operand.

Also, fix a special-case diagnostic about converting a return
expression to (1) only apply to converting the actual return
expression, not an arbitrary sub-expression, and (2) use the
actual operand and return types, not the drilled-down types
that caused the failure.

b2cc34c241 Remove '#' for making parameter names into argument labels.
If you want to make the parameter and argument label the same in
places where you don't get the argument label for free (i.e., the
first parameter of a function or a parameter of a subscript),
double-up the identifier:

  func translate(dx dx: Int, dy: Int) { }

Make this a warning with Fix-Its to ease migration. Part of
rdar://problem/17218256.

793b3326af Implement the new rules for argument label defaults.
The rule changes are as follows:
  * All functions (introduced with the 'func' keyword) have argument
  labels for arguments beyond the first, by default. Methods are no
  longer special in this regard.
  * The presence of a default argument no longer implies an argument
  label.

The actual changes to the parser and printer are fairly simple; the
rest of the noise is updating the standard library, overlays, tests,
etc.

With the standard library, this change is intended to be API neutral:
I've added/removed #'s and _'s as appropriate to keep the user
interface the same. If we want to separately consider using argument
labels for more free functions now that the defaults in the language
have shifted, we can tackle that separately.

6a1b7348e0 Make trailing closure syntax match the last parameter, always.
Previously, trailing closures would try to match the first parameter
of (possibly optional) function type that didn't seem to have an
argument already, but in practice this broke when there were
parameters with default arguments before the function parameter.

The new rule is far simpler: a trailing closure matches the last
parameter. Fixes rdar://problem/17965209.

3b04d1b013 tests: reorganize tests so that they actually use the target platform
Most tests were using %swift or similar substitutions, which did not
include the target triple and SDK.  The driver was defaulting to the
host OS.  Thus, we could not run the tests when the standard library was
not built for OS X.

fa692976f5 If an expression fails to type check, and there were no failures posted or constraints to mine for a reason, we can be fairly certain that the reason for the failure was a lack of contextual type data. In this case, we should post a diagnostic rather than let the failure slip through. This addresses crash suite scenarios 001, 005, 020 and 045. (rdar://problem/16712071, rdar://problem/17317691, rdar://problem/17317691)
You'll notice that emitting this diagnostic will make some already noisy closure-related errors slightly more so. This is unfortunate, but for the time-being it's better than crashing.
