All generic bridgeable types can bridge for all their instantiations now. Removing this ferrets out some now-unnecessary traps that check for unbridgeable parameter types.
change includes both the necessary protocol updates and the deprecation
warnings
suitable for migration. A future patch will remove the renamings and
make this
a hard error.
Being generic, the '_unwrapped' intrinsics force trafficking through memory, and while they're transparent so always get inlined, we don't do memory promotion in -Onone. Emitting the branch inline lets loadable optionals stay values leading to better -Onone codegen. (It also lets us throw away a surprising amount of support code for these optional intrinsics.)
We already have detailed knowledge of Optional's layout in SILGen, so these intrinsics were almost unused. They were only used in a few obscure places by some optional-to-bool conversions, used by 'is [A]' collection tests and the codegen for 'lazy' properties. Change these over to generate an EnumIsCaseExpr that we can directly lower to a 'select_enum' instruction in SILGen, leading to better codegen and obviating the need for these intrinsic functions.
This documentation revision covers a large number of types & protocols:
String, its views and their indices, the Unicode codec types and protocol,
as well as Character, UnicodeScalar, and StaticString, among others.
This also includes a few small changes across the standard library for
consistency.
This is a squash of the following commits:
* [SE-0054] Import function pointer arg, return types, typedefs as optional
IUOs are only allowed on function decl arguments and return types, so
don't import typedefs or function pointer args or return types as IUO.
* [SE-0054] Only allow IUOs in function arg and result type.
When validating a TypeRepr, raise a diagnostic if an IUO is found
anywhere other thn the top level or as a function parameter or return
tpye.
* [SE-0054] Disable inference of IUOs by default
When considering a constraint of the form '$T1 is convertible to T!',
generate potential bindings 'T' and 'T?' for $T1, but not 'T!'. This
prevents variables without explicit type information from ending up with
IUO type. It also prevents implicit instantiation of functions and types
with IUO type arguments.
* [SE-0054] Remove the -disable-infer-iuos flag.
* Add nonnull annotations to ObjectiveCTests.h in benchmark suite.
This is a staging attribute that will eventually mean "fixed-contents"
for structs and "closed" for enums, as described in
docs/LibraryEvolution.rst.
This is pretty much the minimal set of types that must be fixed-layout,
because SILGen makes assumptions about their lowering.
If desired, some SILGen refactoring can allow some of these to be
resilient. For example, bridging value types could be made to work
with resilient types.
This lets us eliminate the _getObjectiveCType() value witness, which
was working around the lack of proper type witness metadata in witness
tables. Boilerplate -= 1.

This reverts commit c223a3bf06, reversing
changes made to 5c2bb09b09.
Changes:
- Reverted commit reverting original SR-88 commit
- Removed mirror children helper collections and related code
- Rewrote some tests to keep them working properly
- Wrote two more tests for the three pointer APIs to ensure no crashes if created using a value > Int64.max
This reverts commit 8917eb0e5a.

- Conformed stdlib types to CustomReflectable, CustomPlaygroundQuickLookable
- Rewrote dump() function to not use _reflect()
- CGRect, CGPoint, CGSize now conform to CustomDebugStringConvertible
- Rewrote unit tests for compatibility with new API
Fixes <rdar://23122310> Runtime dynamic casts...
This makes runtime dynamic casts consistent with language rules, and
consequently makes specialization of generic code consistent with an
equivalent nongeneric implementation.
The runtime now supports casts from Optional<T> to U. Naturally the
cast fails on nil source, but otherwise succeeds if T is convertible to
U.
When casting T to Optional<U> the runtime succeeds whenever T is
convertible to U and simply wraps the result in an Optional.
To greatly simplify the runtime, I am assuming that
target-type-specific runtime cast entry points
(e.g. swift_dynamicCastClass) are never invoked with an optional
source. This assumption is valid for the following reasons. At the
language level optionals must be unwrapped before downcasting (via
as[?!]), so we only need to worry about SIL and IR lowering. This
implementation assumes (with asserts) that:
- SIL promotion from an address cast to a value casts should only happen
when the source is nonoptional. Handling optional unwrapping in SIL
would be too complicated because we need to check for Optional's own
conformances. (I added a test case to ensure this promotion does not
happen). This is not an issue for unchecked_ref_cast, which
implicitly unwraps optionals, so we can promote those!
- IRGen lowers unchecked_ref_cast (Builtin.castReference) directly to
a bitcast (will be caught by asserts).
- IRGen continues to emit the generic dynamicCast entry point for
address-casts (will be caught by asserts).
